Thirteen years of conflict and an enduring economic crisis in the Syrian Arab Republic continue to drive humanitarian needs, disrupt agriculture and weaken the country’s food production capacity. The situation worsened significantly after the earthquakes of February 2023. Inflation, high food prices and a declining economy have pushed more than half of the population into acute food insecurity, with millions more at risk. The resulting increased cost of humanitarian response emphasizes the need for cost-effective solutions. Investing in emergency agricultural assistance is crucial. For example, every USD 1 invested in local wheat production yields around four times its value in food produced.

Food insecurity is worsening in Myanmar, where more than a quarter of the population, 15.2 million people, are experiencing moderate or severe food insecurity. The combined impacts of conflict, political instability, economic crisis and longstanding poverty leave millions unable to access basic services and struggling to meet their families’ food needs. With three in four people dependent on agriculture for their livelihoods, humanitarian support to restore rural households’ production is critical.

One in two Yemenis are acutely food insecure, and every other child under 5 years of age is stunted. Yemen imports 85 percent of its food, making the country highly vulnerable to price hikes and supply disruptions expected this year. Two out of three Yemenis have agricultural livelihoods, yet less than USD 2 out of USD 100 goes towards helping them to produce food. These families are most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change – for which Yemen ranks the third most vulnerable country. An effective humanitarian response in 2024 requires greater attention to agriculture, and those depending on it for food and income. This document provides a summary of the planned response and funding requirements of the Food and Agriculture Orgnization of the United Nations within the framework of the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan for Yemen.
