The tropical fruit sector is particularly at risk from the negative impacts of climate change driven by rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and associated challenges such as water stress and increased pests and diseases. This poses significant risks for the long-term sustainability of production and trade of important tropical fruits including pineapple. Recognizing these challenges, the Responsible Fruits Project has developed this technical guide on climate change adaptation for the pineapple export industry. The guide is for producers and exporters of pineapple who are interested in learning more about climate change in the context of their own business systems. It was developed through a consultative process with pineapple companies and producer organizations participating in the Responsible Fruits Project. The purpose of this technical guide is to:• Provide up-to-date information on recent and predicted climate change effects and trends in key pineapple producing and exporting countries. • Identify climate change risks and impacts on the production and trade of pineapple.• Identify adaptation practices and recommendations that may help to address these risks, minimize negative impacts and build resilience.• Share good practices adopted by companies to address specific climate-related production risks in a sustainable manner.• Identify gaps in information, research and technical solutions needed to strengthen the availability and adoption of adaptation practices.

Policy briefPolicy briefRipe for change: adapting avocado production to a changing climate 2024To better understand current and future climate risks and their impact on avocado production and trade, as well as how to prepare for, and deal with these risks, the Responsible Fruits Project, working in partnership with key players in the avocado sector, produced a technical guide on climate change adaptation. The guide was designed for producers and exporters of pineapple and avocado who are interested in learning more about climate change in the context of their own production systems. This brief summarizes the main findings from the guide related to climate risks and adaptation options for the avocado industry. The Sustainable Tropical Fruits series highlights important developments, technical information and good practices related to resilient, sustainable and inclusive tropical fruit value chains. No results found.In 2015, the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) collaborated to pilot an unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV)-based methodology for pre- and post-disaster assessment in the Bicol and Davao Regions in order to mainstream innovative ways to enhance Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in the agriculture sector. As of 2019, all DA- Regional Field Offices (RFOs) are equipped and capable of operating fixed-wing or multi-rotor UAVs, which have been used in numerous areas affected by disasters. This good practice fact sheet looks at how UAVs contribute to strengthening disaster resilience in the Philippines. -

No results found.The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018. -

As the disease continues to expand into new territories, preparedness and control activities need to be constantly adjusted to adapt to situations observed in the field that may be contrary to what was expected based on international standards or experiences from other parts of the world. This surveillance guideline provides guidance for government officials in defining surveillance objectives, establishing ASF-related case definitions and reporting criteria, providing examples of potential ASF surveillance methods, identifying various crucial factors in consideration of a surveillance system, and evaluating a surveillance system.
