On 6 February 2023, two powerful earthquakes struck the southeastern region of Türkiye. The earthquake-affected area, known as Türkiye’s “fertile crescent”, accounted for approximately 15.3 percent of the country’s agricultural gross domestic product and employed 14 percent of its farmers. The significant damages and losses to crops, livestock, fisheries and agricultural infrastructure were estimated at USD 6.3 billion. In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) scaled up its emergency response and launched its three-year Earthquake Response and Recovery Plan (ERRP) with the overall objective of maintaining food production and availability through the restoration of critical agrifood systems and rural livelihoods. This document provides an overview of FAO's response under the ERRP during February–December 2023 as well as planned response until June 2024. It also highlights FAO’s funding requirements to fully implement the ERRP.

The earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and the northern part of the Syrian Arab Republic on 6 February 2023 caused immense damages and losses, particularly in the countries’ rural areas. As a result, food consumption gaps have grown among the most vulnerable people. Given the already dire situation in the Syrian Arab Republic and the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Türkiye, there is an urgent need to minimize the suffering and uncertainty among already vulnerable communities. Thanks to contributions from the Governments of Belgium, Norway and Sweden, through SFERA, FAO expanded its support to earthquake‑affected communities in the two countries by providing critical agricultural livelihoods assistance to address both immediate needs as well as longer term effects of the earthquake.

On 6 February 2023, two devastating earthquakes followed by tremors and aftershocks ripped through the southeastern region of Türkiye. The agriculture sector incurred direct damages amounting to USD 1.3 billion, alongside estimated losses of USD 5.1 billion in agricultural production. Smallholder farming households and small-scale agricultural producers were among the hardest hit by the disaster. Therefore, it was imperative for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to complement national response and recovery efforts. In support of national priorities and FAO’s efforts, the Government of Germany, through the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, contributed USD 1 060 090 for the implementation of project OSRO/ TUR/011/GER, entitled “Rural revive: Rebuilding rural communities through cooperative movement”. This document provides a summary of the context, objective and expected outputs of the project.
