Synopsis (short abstract) This fact sheet, published by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, outlines the mission and impact of the Mountain Partnership. Established in 2002, the Mountain Partnership boasts over 550 members, including governments, intergovernmental agencies, institutions and civil society organizations. It harnesses the diverse knowledge, experiences and expertise of its global network to address pressing challenges facing mountain peoples and environments. The Mountain Partnership is supported by a Secretariat hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in Rome. The Secretariat spearheads advocacy efforts, promotes the science-policy dialogue, facilitates investments, shares best practices and catalyses action to bolster the resilience of mountain ecosystems and communities. The Mountain Partnership Secretariat is funded by Andorra, Italy and Switzerland, and operates through four key pillars: advocacy, communications, capacity development and joint action. These pillars drive initiatives such as coordinating the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions 2023–2027, producing various technical publications and communication content, hosting training programmes and technical webinars, implementing projects that empower mountain producers and improve livelihoods, and facilitating international observances like International Mountain Day. This fact sheet highlights the efforts of the Mountain Partnership and its Secretariat which are crucial for raising awareness and mobilizing support for mountains and integrating mountain issues into broader global agendas like the 2030 Agenda and UN conventions.
