    This document contains the Report and papers presented at the Regional Workshop on Networking for Improved Access to Fisheries and Aquaculture Information in Africa, which was held in Grahamstown, South Africa, from 3 to 7 November 2003. Eighteen participants from Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Seychelles and South Africa attended the Workshop and presented papers. Fisheries library networking activities were reviewed as a basis for planning future collaboration to improve ac cess to fisheries information and to promote information resources sharing. The summary of priority issues includes improved dissemination of African fisheries publications, full-text online fisheries journals, open source software, network focal points, the use of standard methodologies to enhance information exchange and technology for document delivery. The long-term goal of the network is to strengthen the information capacity at national fisheries institutions in Africa.

    The Access to Global Online Research in Agriculture (AGORA) User guide provides in-depth information about the AGORA programme including its background, content, how to join, eligibility details, partners and impact. The user guide also includes step-by-step instructions on how to access and efficiently utilize the AGORA content portal for current users, along with answers to troubleshooting issues. This publication will help to increase AGORA’s target audience (interested and registered public institutions in low-income countries) ability to utilize the AGORA platform efficiently, providing them with free or low-cost access to thousands of major scientific journals, electronic books and other resources from the world’s leading academic publishers in the fields of agriculture, fisheries, food, nutrition, veterinary science and related biological, environmental and related social sciences. The goal of the guide, and how it contributes to FAO's Strategic Objectives and priorities is to improve the quality and effectiveness of access to agricultural research, education and training in low-income countries, and in turn, improve food security. Through the proper use of the AGORA programme and content platform, researchers, policy-makers, educators, students, technical workers, and extension specialists have digital access to high-quality, relevant and timely agricultural information.

    La presente pubblicazione offre una panoramica degli eventi storici che hanno portato alla formazione della Biblioteca della FAO. Tutto ebbe inizio con l’Istituto Internazionale di Agricoltura (IIA), il precursore della FAO, fondato a Roma nel 1905 da Re Vittorio Emanuele III su iniziativa di David Lubin. Quando venne fondata nel 1945, la FAO prese in custodia l’IIA e la sua Biblioteca, che a quel tempo comprendeva una delle più grandi collezioni al mondo relativa alla ricerca agricola. La Bibl ioteca della FAO venne inaugurata ufficialmente a Roma nel 1952 con il nome di Biblioteca David Lubin come riconoscimento dello straordinario contributo di David Lubin alla cooperazione internazionale nel settore dell’agricoltura. Da allora ha accorpato al patrimonio dell’IIA la sua collezione, raccogliendo e conservando ogni singolo documento della FAO pubblicato. Oggi la Biblioteca David Lubin ospita un milione e mezzo di volumi, che insieme costituiscono la memoria della FAO.
