Synopsis (short abstract) A review of the historical developments of consumption, production and trade of forest products in the region followed by a forecast of future trends (1993-2010) through the use of a dynamic spatial equilibrium model. The forecasts indicate that the Asia-Pacific demand for forest products will continue to rise, as rapidly growing economies are concentrated in the region. The real prices of industrial roundwood and sawnwood are projected to increase slowly until the year 2010. The real prices of wood-based panels and of paper and paperboard are not predicted to change greatly.

The main factors affecting consumption and trade are discussed and the availability of various raw materials for panel production is investigated. The outlook for panel consumption and trade is presented on a subregional and country basis and predicted trade flows are given for the main importing and exporting countries in the region.

    This report examines the evolution of the solid wood industries of the forest sector of the Asia-Pacific region from 1995 to 2010. Three scenarios are considered: a base case scenario reflects the current supply and demand conditions of the region, and the current industry structure and trading relationships; a second scenario examines conditions of scarcity of supply from the natural forest and the third scenario combines scarcity conditions with stronger end-product demand.
