Synopsis (short abstract) The rationale for more integrated approaches to aquaculture development is powerful: coastal aquaculture has brought significant benefits to both national economies and coastal people; aquaculture is highly vulnerable to pollution caused by other resource users; if poorly designed or managed it may cause pollution or the spread of disease; its impacts are often limited but incremental and cumulative; and it often takes place in areas where resource ownership or use rights are ill defined and amb iguous. Efforts to integrate aquaculture into coastal management can contribute to improvements in selection, protection and allocation of sites and other resources for existing and future aquaculture developments. This report explores how more planned and integrated approaches can be applied to aquaculture development. These approaches range from "enhanced sectoral" initiatives, to incorporation within comprehensive ICM programmes. No simple, effective, and widely applicable models have been identified. The most appropriate approach will depend upon a wide range of local factors, including available skills and resources, the urgency of the problems or opportunities, and the nature of existing planning and development frameworks. The less comprehensive approaches may be the only realistic option in some situations, but should be seen as a starting point for, and stimulus to, more comprehensive ICM. These approaches should contribute to more systematic planning and improved m anagement of individual aquaculture operations, as well as to the coastal aquaculture sector as a whole.

    This GESAMP study focuses on environmental risk assessment and communication in coastal aquaculture. To support effectively an open and transparent approach to sustainable resource use, risk assessment and communication must be able to fit within a broader social, economic and environmental decision-making framework. The communication aspects become paramount in enabling sustainable development in that type of decision-making environment. This publication presents a set of objectives, goals, met hodologies and a checklist for assessment and communication of environmental risks which may be associated with coastal aquaculture. It is structured to improve risk communication and to ensure that risk assessment is a scientific exercise in predicting environmental change. A set of six case studies is also presented to illustrate the use of the environmental risk assessment methodologies in coastal aquaculture. These examples of environmental interactions span a range of cultured species from fin fish to molluscs and shrimp. The type of effects studied includes effects on carrying capacity, phytoplankton, kelp, benthic fauna, the genome of wild fishes and salinisation of soils.

    Regional workshop on the rehabilitation of fisheries and aquaculture in coastal communities of tsunami affected countries in Asia 2005

    This is the final report of the Regional Workshop on Rehabilitation of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Coastal Communities of Tsunami Affected Countries in Asia held in Bangkok, Thailand from 28 February to 1 March 2005. It was organized by CONSRN – a consortium of regional fisheries/aquaculture bodies formed in the aftermath of the 26 December 2004 tsunami to restore the shattered livelihoods of communities in tsunami affected countries. The objectives of the workshop were to build an agreed strat egic framework and draft programme based on country inputs and advice from non-governmental organizations and donors. The meeting was attended by 53 participants from six of the tsunami affected countries (India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Thailand), CONSRN participants, donor agencies and non-governmental organizations. Major topics discussed were: introduction to the workshop and regional strategic framework; country priorities for rehabilitation; vision and guiding principles for rehabilitation activities; rehabilitation strategies; aligning donors/agencies/countries to strategies and recommendations.
