To unleash countries' and regions’ potential for agricultural innovation, their human and institutional capacities need to be strengthened, and investments in capacity development (CD) for agricultural innovation systems (AIS) need to be scaled up. This Side Event aims to share successful examples of the partners of the TAP, a global, multi-stakeholder facilitation mechanism on CD for AIS, supported by the European Union and coordinated by FAO. The event will introduce the TAP approach of CD for AIS at the individual, organizational, and policy levels. This FAO event during the Science and Innovation Forum is aimed to promote knowledge sharing in support of agricultural innovation. The promotion of agricultural innovation is the main objective of the Tropical Agriculture Platform (TAP), a G20 initiative launched in 2012, led by FAO and financially supported by the European Union. TAPipedia, the knowledge hub developed in the context of TAP, is positioning itself as the reference gateway for innovation-related practices, stories and case studies, and aims to reach a broader audience and enrich its repository. Participants will be introduced to TAPipedia and to collaborative experiences in support of knowledge sharing on agricultural innovation. The event will feature a panel discussion to strategize the use of online platforms for capacity development for agricultural innovation and possible future developments.

The Africa Open Data for Environment, Agriculture and Land initiative has made Africa the first continent to complete the collection of accurate, comprehensive, and harmonized digital land use and land-use change data over the past 20 years; potential for restoration at the national level for every country was also assessed. The detailed snapshot of the continent was captured through more than 300 000 sampling points collected by 350 operators from 2018 to 2020 through the open-source Collect Earth tool, developed in FAO in collaboration with Google.
