No results found. The regional workshop on the “Development of Species Identification Guides for Deep-sea Cartilaginous Fishes of the Indian Ocean” was held in Flic en Flac, Mauritius, from 16 to 18 January 2013. It was attended by 15 participants from a wide range of countries and fields of expertise, including taxonomy, bioecology of cartilaginous fishes and the fishing industry. The general objective of the workshop was to discuss, share experiences and finally draft recommendations for the development of fiel d products aimed at facilitating the identification of Indian Ocean deep-sea cartilaginous fishes. The key goals were: to draft the final list of species to be included in the field product (or products); to define the format of the field product and how the species should be depicted; to agree on which information for each species should be included; to define the best way to help the user avoid confusing the species with similar ones; and finally to draft a proposal for the training of fishers and fishery observers to be carried out on board fishing vessels operating in the Indian Ocean. -

It includes the keynote addresses and papers presented on the Conference themes that covered: environment, ecosystem biology, habitat, diversity and oceanography; population biology and resource assessment; harvesting and conservation strategies for resource management; technology require ments; monitoring, compliance and controls; a review of existing policies and instruments; and governance and management. It also provides the perspectives of participating experts and the Conference Steering Committee. The general conclusions of the Conference contain the elements that must be addressed and undertaken if deep-sea fish resources are to be sustained and their habitat protected to ensure productivity and safeguard deep-sea biodiversity. The second volume of the p roceedings includes posters and corresponding papers presented at the Conference as well as papers from workshops held prior to the main Conference. -
Book (series)Review of the implementation of the International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas 2024
Also available in:
No results found. The International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas (DSF Guidelines) were adopted by FAO in 2008. The first and only review of the implementation of the Guidelines took place in 2010. There have been many advances in implementation since then and it is timely to conduct another review. The DSF Guidelines have been used to guide regional fisheries management organizations and states in the development of spatial management processes defining fishing grounds and protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems. The DSF Guidelines also require that harvested fish stocks and impacts on bycatch species are assessed and managed, but this has been less well implemented.
