Synopsis (short abstract) This paper describes mechanical hauling devices for beachcraft developed and tested by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) in India and Sri Lanka. The paper records the project’s experiences with beach-hauling devices from 1980 till 1985. A diesel engine-driven winch capable of hauling boats up to a weight of about 1500 kg was introduced and is now manufactured commercially. A problem that still awaits solution is that of suitable rollers underneath the hull t o reduce friction drag. The trials have shown that for larger craft and rough conditions, more complicated multi-speed winches are required. Besides the authors, those who took part in the work included Mr. Oyvind Gulbrandsen, Naval Architect (Consultant), who designed and tested the manually operated capstan; Mr. R. Ravikumar, Naval Architect; Mr. S.O. Johansen, BOBP Naval Architect (Associate Professional Officer); Mr. S.B. Sarma, Inspector of Fisheries, Andhra Pradesh; and Mr. E. Sriniva san, Inspector of Fisheries, Tamil Nadu Numerous fishermen also participated in the trials. The work on beachhauling devices, and this paper describing the work, were sponsored by the small-scale fisheries project of the BOBP.

    Pivoting Engine Installation For Beachlanding Boats - BOBP/WP/44 1986

    This paper describes the efforts to develop an appropriate engine installation for boats designed and developed for fishermen in India and Sri Lanka operating from surf ridden beaches. These boats have to negotiate rough surf conditions for most part of the year with breaking waves up to two metres in height. The paper details the different types of pivoting engine installations tried out with air-cooled and water-cooled engines of different makes. The problems faced, the improvements made and the conclusions derived are set out. It also includes a detailed description of an installation. The detailed drawings are available with BOBP and may be obtained on request. The work on engine installations described in this paper was carried out by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) as part of its beachcraft development project. It began in 1980. The first trials were conducted from a beach just outside Madras and were reported in BOBP/WP/7 “T echnical Trials of Beachcraft Prototypes in India.” The original concept of the pivoting engine box was conceived by 0. Gulbrandsen (Naval Architect Consultant) who also designed the first prototype. Further development described in this paper was done by the authors, assisted by BOBP Associate Professional Officers P.A. Hemminghyth (Marine Engineer) and SO. Johansen (Naval Architect), counterpart officers S.B. Sarma (Andhra Pradesh), E. Srinivasan (Tamil Nadu) and G. Patrick (Colombo). G. Gowing (Surf Crossing Consultant) from Australia also contributed several useful ideas. Trials were carried out in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Orissa in India and Sri Lanka. Another BOBP document of direct relevance to the subject described in this paper is BOBP/WP/45 “Further Development of Beachlanding Craft in India and Sri Lanka.”

    Fishing Trails With Beachlanding Craft At Uppada, Andhra Pradesh, India - BOBP/WP/56 1987

    This paper discusses the conduct and findings of fishing trials carried out with the BOBP beachcraft IND 20-C at Uppada, Andhra Pradesh, India between August 1985 and July 1986. The beachcraft was equipped with fishing gear designed to catch large pelagic species. The idea was to investigate the craft’s fishing potential in offshore areas — since earlier fishing trials had been confined to inshore waters. The trials were conducted at the request of the Directorate of Fisheries and in cooperati on with them. Five private fishermen constituted the crew. An inspector of fisheries was the main local counterpart. On behalf of BOBP, a fishing technologist (associate professional officer) provided the expertise, while a senior fishing technologist and a naval architect consultant provided supervision and advice as necessary. The trials showed that the BOBP beachcraft are capable of fishing in offshore waters upto 35 n miles. Catch performance and profitability can be improved with better o rganization and refinements to the craft’s propuLion unit. The fishing trials, and this paper which reports on them, were sponsored by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP) during its first phase (1979 - 86). During this phase the project was funded by SIDA (Swedish International Development Authority) and executed by the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). Its objective was to develop, demonstrate and promote methodologies and tech nologies to improve the conditions of small-scale fisherfolk in five member countries - Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

    This paper describes eight new prototypes of beachlanding craft developed by the small-scale fisheries project of the Bay of Bengal Programme (BOBP). It also describes the technical trials of the craft with emphasis on surf crossing abilities. This working paper is a sequel to BOBP/WP/7, “Technical Trials of Beachcraft Prototypes in India” which described BOBP’s first trials of four prototypes.
