Synopsis (short abstract) The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme has developed a series of innovative social safeguards to encourage women and men’s active participation in community decisions. In our projects, we aim to improve women’s access to resources and services. This will reduce the gender gap between women and men, where necessary, and improve wildlife management and food security for all. This brochure explains the SWM Programme’s gender approach in a simple and visual way, highlighting six key steps to follow to ensure gender equality and empowerment of women, and including quotes and examples from Congo, Gabon, Guyana, Namibia, Papua New Guinea, Senegal, and Zimbabwe.

    The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme is the first international initiative to tackle the wild meat challenge by addressing both wildlife conservation and food security. This African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States (ACP) initiative is funded by the European Union through the 11th European Development Fund (EUR 45 Million). The SWM Programme mobilizes an international group of partner organizations with strong expertise and experience in wildlife conservation, food security and policy development. It is implemented through a consortium partnership, which includes the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD). The SWM Programme is developing innovative, collaborative and scalable new models, which conserve wildlife and protect ecosystems, whilst at the same time improving the living conditions and food security of the people who depend on these resources. Eight models are being developed in thirteen pilot countries, of which twelve are ACP countries. In each country, the SWM partners are working closely with national authorities and other local institutions. The RESSOURCE Project is part of the SWM Programme and aims to improve the management of natural resources and in particular migratory waterbird populations in the Sahelian wetlands for the benefit of local people.

    This brochure aims to give a concise and visual introduction to the Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme. The SWM Programme is the first international initiative to tackle the wild meat challenge by addressing both wildlife conservation and food security. It is an initiative from the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD).The SWM Programme mobilizes an international group of partner organizations with strong expertise and experience in wildlife conservation, food security and policy development. It is implemented through a consortium partnership, which includes the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR), the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD). The SWM Programme is developing innovative, collaborative and scalable new models, which conserve wildlife and protect ecosystems, while at the same time improving the living conditions and food security of the people who depend on these resources. Field projects are being implemented in 15 African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. In each country, the SWM Programme partners are working closely with communities, national authorities and other local institutions.

    The Sustainable Wildlife Management (SWM) Programme in Guyana is encouraging coordinated community-driven initiatives that support food security and traditional livelihoods. These will contribute to maintaining healthy fish and terrestrial wildlife populations. It is being implemented by the Guyana Wildlife Conservation and Management Commission in coordination with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR). The SWM Programme is the first international initiative to tackle the wild meat challenge by addressing both wildlife conservation and food security. Between 2018 and 2024, the SWM Programme implements field projects across 3 continents. The aim is to improve how wildlife hunting is regulated; increase the supply of sustainably produced meat products and farmed fish; strengthen the management capacities of indigenous and rural communities; reduce demand for wild meat, particularly in towns and cities. The SWM Programme is an Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States initiative, which is being funded by the European Union with co-funding from the French Global Environment Facility. The SWM Programme is being implemented by a dynamic consortium of partners which includes FAO, the French Agricultural Research Centre for International Development (CIRAD), the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
