ProjectImplementing Integrated Water Resources Management in Balochistan - UTF/PAK/157/PAK 2025

No results found. The Government of Balochistan, particularly the Irrigation Department, sought to improve integrated water resources management (IWRM) through reforms and capacity building. However, outdated institutional and legal frameworks hindered effective implementation. In response, the Government of Balochistan, with support from the World Bank, began a review in June 2018 to modernize these frameworks, although additional technical expertise was required to navigate the process. Building on the successful collaboration between the FAO and the Government of Sindh on similar reforms, the Irrigation Department invited the FAO to provide technical assistance. The main goal was to develop updated IWRM policies and legal reforms to create an environment that supports the Government of Balochistan’s objective of sustainable water resource management. The project aimed to help the authorities implement the Balochistan Integrated Water Resources Management and Development Project (BIWRMDP), focusing on reform and capacity building for IWRM. It strengthened and restructured institutions by identifying suitable institutional arrangements for the initial phases of IWRM in Balochistan, proposing a feasible plan for institutional change based on current capacity, and supporting the early implementation of the reform roadmap and specific actions within it. The project was designed and implemented in coordination with other water governance initiatives, especially those funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the European Union, using a drafting group platform to address related challenges. -
