    AGRIS is among the most comprehensive online collections of agricultural and related sciences information. It is a growing glob-al catalog of 5 million high-quality structured bibliographic records indexed from a worldwide group of providers. AGRIS relies heavily on the AGROVOC thesaurus for its indexing. Following the conversion of that thesaurus into a SKOS concept-scheme and its publication as Linked Open Data (LOD), the entire set of AGRIS records was also triplified and released as LOD. As part of this exercise, OpenAGRIS, a semantic mashup application, was developed to dynamically combine AGRIS data with external data sources, using a mixture of SPARQL queries and web services. The re-engineering of AGRIS for the Semantic Web raised numerous issues regarding the relative lack of administrative metadata required to compellingly address the proof and trust layers of the Semantic Web stack, both within the AGRIS repository and in the external data pulled into OpenAGRIS. The AGRIS te am began a process of disambiguation and enrichment to continue moving toward an entity-based view of its resources, beginning with the tens of thousands of journals attached to its records. The evolution of the system, the issues raised during the triplification process and the steps necessary for publishing the result as LOD content are hereby discussed and evaluated.

    Scielo articles available to the agricultural community using OAI-PMH in AGRIS AP XML Format 2008

    This article reports a new way of getting access to SciELO full text journal articles using AGRIS AP XML format to harvest SciELO metadata and to include them into the AGRIS repository. It covers the following main steps of the work carried out: • Selecting about 43 journals with agricultural thematic from the Web site of SciELO; • Defining the methodology for harvesting; • Harvesting legacy data and then doing incremental harvesting for the new data from the selected SciELO journal articles for inclusion in the AGRIS XML repository; • Inclusion of SciELO articles and open access to them through the AGRIS search portal at http://www.fao.org/agris/search/search.do?query=%2Bcenter%3A%28XS%29 • Testing and proposals for improvement and future use of this feature. We share the methodology used, problems encountered, and the expected benefit. This work proves that semantically rich metadata for agricultural science and research publications based on the “AGRIS Applic ation Profile” from the SciELO repository can be handled by the OAI-PMH protocol. It shows how the selected subset of metadata created with an ISIS application can be harvested through OAI-PMH protocol, which in turn allows for further creation of additional services by giving greater access and visibility to SciELO data in the new AGRIS AP format compared to the used DC format. The strategy that we adopted was to adapt BIREME’s OAI-PMH plug-in for direct generating of AGRIS AP XML fro m the SciELO application. The existing BIREME OAI-PMH plug-in interface was upgraded to accept and expose metadata using AGRIS AP in addition to the existing DC schema. This approach was elegant but required more time for realization and implementation by BIREME and FAO staff.

    Thematic studies on groundwater governance 2016

    The document is a compilation of up-to-date, existing knowledge on groundwater governance, developed by leading international scientists and experts within the framework of the GEF project “Groundwater Governance - A Global Framework of Action”. It covers nine selected themes that focus on different aspects and adopt different angles of view. Some of the themes deal with scientific and technical aspects (groundwater quality and quantity and approaches to their management), others with the govern ance and policy process in general or with selected aspects of groundwater governance (context, law, institutions, social and economic aspects). In addition, two themes that had been covered by the World Bank were added: one on political economy and the other on climate change. The document, comprising the thematic papers and their synthesis, forms a unique volume of knowledge on groundwater governance, a subject that in similar compiled form is not yet documented elsewhere. Therefore, the Proje ct made an effort to make the information publicly available to those interested in the fascinating subject of groundwater governance.
