Syrian Arab Republic: Humanitarian Response Plan 2023 2023

With the conflict now in its thirteenth year, the Syrian Arab Republic continues to face insecurity, economic crisis, drought-like conditions and severe agroclimatic fluctuations. An estimated 12.1 million people are food insecure, of which 49 percent live in rural areas. Without urgent support, an additional 2.9 million people are at risk of becoming food insecure. Humanitarian response to support farming and livestock‑keeping families with restoring their production is critical. Every USD 1 invested to help a farmer grow wheat yields more than 4.5 times its value in staple food produced, for that family, their local community and markets.

Syrian Arab Republic: Earthquake response and recovery plan, 2023–2026 2023

The earthquakes that struck the Syrian Arab Republic on 6 February 2023 caused major damages and losses, affecting both urban and rural areas. For example, buildings collapsed in the main built-up areas; crops, livestock, food stocks and essential agricultural inputs were lost; and irrigation systems and farms were damaged, along with markets and infrastructure. As a result, food consumption gaps have grown further among the most vulnerable people. Given the already dire situation in the Syrian Arab Republic, after 12 years of conflict and crisis, there is an urgent need to address the suffering and uncertainty of the affected communities. In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations is proposing a three-year Earthquake response and recovery plan (ERRP), seeking USD 45 million to deliver both immediate and longer-term support to severely affected rural communities in the governorates of Aleppo, Hama, Idleb, Latakia and Tartous. Through the ERRP, FAO envisages that affected farming families will save and sustain their livelihoods, build self-reliance, and improve their resilience, ultimately reducing the humanitarian caseload. This document serves as a roadmap for the ERRP and as a resource mobilization tool, presenting the rationale, the expected impact, outcomes and outputs of the ERRP as well as the funding requirements.

Türkiye and the Syrian Arab Republic: Contributions to the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) from Belgium, Norway and Sweden 2023

The earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and the northern part of the Syrian Arab Republic on 6 February 2023 caused immense damages and losses, particularly in the countries’ rural areas. As a result, food consumption gaps have grown among the most vulnerable people. Given the already dire situation in the Syrian Arab Republic and the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Türkiye, there is an urgent need to minimize the suffering and uncertainty among already vulnerable communities. Thanks to contributions from the Governments of Belgium, Norway and Sweden, through SFERA, FAO expanded its support to earthquake‑affected communities in the two countries by providing critical agricultural livelihoods assistance to address both immediate needs as well as longer term effects of the earthquake.
