This report presents the world nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilizer medium-term supply and demand projections for the period 2011-2015. The FAO/Fertilizer Organizations Working Group met in FAO, Rome in June 2011 to review the prospects for fertilizer demand and supply, and made the forecasts.Annex 1 presents explanatory notes on potential supply, demand and balance. Annexes 2, 3, and 4 present world and regional (listed in Annex 8) fertilizer demand forecasts for nitrogen, phosphate, an d potash, respectively. Annexes 5, 6 and 7 present world and regional potential supply, demand and balance for the three primary nutrients. Name plate capacity, operating rates and demand for fertilizers vary from year to year.

The world economy has broadly strengthened over the past three years and is expected to continue this strengthening during 2014-2015. The world cereal production in 2014 is estimated to reach 2 498 000 000 tonnes, or 2.2 percent below that of the record production in 2013. World demand for total fertilizer nutrients is estimated to grow at 1.8 percent per annum from 2014 to 2018. The demand for nitrogen, phosphate, and potash is forecast to grow annually by 1.4, 2.2, and 2.6 percent, respectiv ely, during the period. The global potential nitrogen balance (i.e. the difference between N potentially available for fertilizers and N fertilizer demand) as a percentage of N fertilizer demand is expected to steadily rise and reach 9.5 percent in 2018, that of phosphorous from 6.4 percent of total demand to 8.5 percent and that of potassium from 25 percent of total demand to 33 percent.

The World fertilizer trends and outlook to 2020 is the latest in a series of annual reports that result from meetings of FAO Plant Production and Protection (AGP) and Statistics (ESS) Divisions, and the Fertilizer Organization Working Group, in which nitrogen, phosphate and potassium fertilizer medium-term supply and demand is estimated and projected for the following five years. The report is intended for use by a range of stakeholders in the public, private and educational sectors and c ivil society to use as a source of information and guide to fertilizer use and trends at global, regional and country levels, and to assist in planning and management of fertilizer resources.World consumption of the three main fertilizer nutrients, nitrogen (N), phosphorus expressed as phosphate (P2 O5 ), and potassium expressed as potash (K2 O), is estimated to reach 186.67 million tonnes (N, P2 O5 and K2 O) in 2016, up by 1.4 percent over 2015 consumption levels. The demand for N, P2 O5 , and K2 O is forecast to grow annually on average by 1.5, 2.2, and 2.4 percent respectively from 2015 to 2020. Over the next five years, the global capacity of the production of fertilizers, intermediates and raw materials is also expected to increase.
