This project supports communities in wetland areas of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic in efforts to reduce pressure on wetlands area, improve management and stewardship and diversify livelihoods. The project outcomes were consistent with national policies and plans, and it was successful in a range of wetland conservation efforts. Evidence-based planning and mainstreaming of climate change adaptation, disaster risk management and wetland conservation has been conducted in regular planning exercises, training of government staff and participating communities. RAMSAR site steering committees have been established. A major threat continues to be encroachment of wetlands for rice cultivation and use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides in rice fields.

This project was formulated to provide technical assistance to a programme entitled “Strategic Support for Food Security and Nutrition Project” (SSFSNP), funded by the Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP ). The SSFSNP project had four components: ( i ) strengthened public services; ii) community driven nutrition sensitive agriculture; (iii) sustainable and inclusive market driven partnerships; and (iv) project management. It was implemented in four northern provinces of Lao People’s Democratic Republic, where rates of undernutrition and food insecurity are high, and where the most common economic activities agriculture and the extraction of non timber forest products (NTFPs) are negatively impacted by climate change, land concessions, and unsustainable farming practices and natural resource use. This project, known as the Technical Assistance for Strategic Support for Food Security and Nutrition Project (TA SSFSNP), was designed to support the implementation of components i and iii of the SSFSNP through four distinct Outputs focusing on: the development of a forage programme , the establishment of a project management information system ( ProMIS ), the analysis of seven value chains, and a review of contract farming in the country.

Strengthening Agro-Climatic Monitoring and Information Systems in Lao People’s Democratic Republic - GCP/LAO/021/LDF 2023
    Also available in:

The main problem to be addressed by the Strengthening Agro-climatic Monitoring and Information Systems (SAMIS) project was the lack of human and institutional capacity to monitor and analyseclimate variability and climate change impacts in the agricultural sector in both near-real time and the future. The project responded to this problem by providing solutions of a technical nature that were new or unknown to beneficiaries and stakeholders. The project had two objectives: i) to enhance at national and provincial levels, monitoring, analysis, communication and the use of agrometeorological data and information for decision-making in relation to agriculture and food security; and ii) to improve the monitoring and analysis of agricultural production systems by strengthening land resources information management systems through the development of a Land Resources Information Management System (LRIMS) and agroecological zoning (AEZ) to support agricultural policies and climate-change adaptation.
