No results found. As part of the Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB)’s Agrifood initiative, which seeks to demonstrate the impact of value chains on the environment, socioeconomic well being and public health, this project supported the implementation of a study of maize monoculture and the traditional farming system known as milpa in Mexico. The project was carried out in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with FAO being responsible for i ) obtaining a biodiversity baseline (BL) for food and agriculture in the project area; ii) systematizing good practices and success stories in biodiversity for food and agriculture; and (iii) analysing existing initiatives, strategies, programmes and projects that explore the intersection of agriculture and biodiversity in Mexico. The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) assisted in the implementation of the project by gathering field data to support the achievement of outputs. The project’s main aim was to support the integration of success stories in milpa and maize production, as well as the findings and recommendations of the TEEBAgrifood study as a whole, into the plans and programmes of the Secretaría de Agricultura y Desarrollo Rural (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development [SADER]) and the Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources [SEMARNAT]) to promote the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity in Mexico.
