    Mangroves are biodiversity- and carbon-rich socio-ecological ecosystems that provide essential goods and services to millions of people. In particular, food, medicine, and wood, which is the primary source of energy and construction material for several Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) living in coastal areas. Mangrove loss and degradation occur at alarming rates putting at risk the traditional livelihoods of IPLCs. Community-led mangrove conservation could be a cost-effective solution to conserve mangrove forests, their ecosystem services, and biological diversity within and beyond protected areas. Although community-based mangrove conservation is a common practice, few successful case studies are known. In West Mexico, IPLCs have been conserving and managing mangrove ecosystems for decades to produce mangrove wood for both domestic and commercial purposes. Through participatory planning, zones have been designated for conservation, wood production, water bodies protection, and restoration. Historical mangrove cover change analysis for the periods 1970/1980, 2005 and 2010 revealed forest expansion within the community-led conserved area (UMA), including in wood production zones. West Mexico is a unique case study that could provide valuable mangrove conservation best practices and lessons learned to other communities around the world. This community-based conservation strategy may contribute to achieving national and international environmental and biodiversity targets by providing multiple socio-ecological and economic benefits from local to global scales if implemented with a rights-based conservation perspective that incorporates multidisciplinary and participatory scientific assessments and traditional knowledge. It could also enhance sustainable local traditional livelihoods and biocultural practices while reducing illegal logging and contributing to mitigating the effects of climate change and biodiversity loss through nature-based solutions.     Nature-based tourism governance as one of the innovative approaches to protected area management and governance

    Nature-based tourism (NBT) is treated as one of the crucial income-generating opportunities for the local communities who are directly and indirectly depended on the natural resources of the protected areas of Bangladesh. Being a multi-stakeholder-based business, NBT development and practice in the ecologically sensitive forest-based protected areas is encapsulated as a complex phenomenon which have further been aggravated due to the application of co-management approach (CMA). CMA is as an alternative management approach to the protected areas of Bangladesh. The CMA is enticing a paradigm shift in protected area management which is basically designed to promote biodiversity conservation through improving its governance and creating income generating opportunities particularly for the local resource user groups. The study explored that NBT governance performs a vital role in ensuring the management and governance of protected areas. Several governance dimensions (participation, accountability, transparency, power, rules of law, and social learning) were studied to analyse how the management and governance of protected areas were persuaded considering CMA as a shared governance approach. The findings of the case study showed that each of the governance dimensions of NBT positively influenced the management and overall governance of Lawachara National Park which facilitated the acceptance and applicability of NBT not only as an income generating opportunity but also a tool to promote the management and governance of the Park. There were many challenges (like lack of trained human resource, incentives, monitoring and tourism management strategies, coordination among the concerned stakeholders, and so on) to practice NBT in a systematic way. Addressing these challenges effectively are expected to further improve the tourists’ experiences as well as the hosts’ experiences that will ultimately improve the overall management and governance status of protected areas.     Vulnerability assessment of Ukrainian forests to climate change as the base of nature-based solutions for mitigation and adaptation

    A wide range of climatic conditions in Ukraine causes significant regional differences in the vulnerability of forests to climate change. The mitigation/adaptation strategy should be based on assessments of their vulnerability at the regional level. Phytoindication model by prof. Y.P. Didukh (1994) was used to assess forest vulnerability. The model gives a quantitative estimation of climate as one of major environmental factors affecting the distribution, condition and productivity of vegetation on the base of climate-related indicators – continentality, humidity and frost. For these indicators climate suitability scales were calculated. Modeling was carried out for main forest species: Pinus sylvestris L., Quercus robur L., Fagus sylvatica L., Picea abies (L.) H.Karst, Betula pendula Roth., Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. and Robinia pseudoacacia L. Climate projections based on the Euro CORDEX time series (up to 2100) and 2 scenarios of the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP 4.5, RCP 8.5) were used. By means of Q-GIS the maps containing zones of suitability to climate for each of studied species were created for current climate conditions and future time series. The directions for strengthening the mitigation and adaptive capacity of forests are considered. The mainstream for nature-based solutions is adaptive sustainable forest management, which provides: 1)optimization of land use structure and increasing the forested area; 2) development and implementation of a national forestry program considering the priorities of climate change and low-carbon development; 3) using wood to substitute greenhouse gas intensive-materials and fossil fuels; 4) best forestry practices through the introduction of modern Climate Smart Forestry principles.
