This publication summarizes very succintly the key achievements and collaboration for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in the Europe and Central Asia region, despite the backdrop of ongoing challenges such as the war in Ukraine, climate change and political instability. The first section approaches programme work through the lens of the four betters. The work of FAO for its Regional Priority Programme on Empowering smallholders, family farms and youth thorugh inclusive rural transformation, digitalization and innovation" such as the Green Agriculture Technical Platform, digital agriculture and better access to resources and are described under the better production heading, Also under better production is FAO's work on One Health and other initiatives related to the "Regional Priority Programme: transforming food systems and facilitating market access and integration." The section on better nutrition includes food safety work, the achievements of the Issue-based Coalition on Sustainable Food Systems, Codex, plant health and markets and trade. The better environment part of the section focuses on climate change mitigation and the adaption of agrifood systems to be more sustainable and resilient. Gender equity, rural transformation and resilient agrifood systems are described under the rubric of better life.The second section of the report gives a very brief synopsis of important completed and ongoing project work in Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Republic of Moldova, Serbia, Tajikistan, Türkiye, Turkmenistan and Ukraine. The narrative covers the One country One Priority Product programme, the Digital Villages initiative and smart villages, women bean growers, a project about women driving resilience, the national animal identification and tracing project that has expanded within the region, locust control, land consolidation, the development of a digital land cadastre system, women's cooperatives and women's empowerment, Farmer Field Schools, forest restoration and biodiversity conservation non-wood forest products value chain development and more. -

In each quarterly issue, the reader meets our real heroes and reads their stories: how communities, especially women from remote villages, strive to achieve a better life and how FAO, together with various partners and governments, stand hand-in-hand with them to achieve effective results. This issue reports on the updates regarding the gendered impacts of the war in Ukraine and gender-responsive earthquake recovery in Türkiye, International Day of Rural Women celebrations in the region, FAO's new resource guide to mainstreaming gender in climate investments, and the UN Food Systems Summit proceedings. Summary and recommendations of the International forum (10, 12, 17 March 2021)

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) commissioned the National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow to organize the international forum “Food policy, rural development and gender equality in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia: current trends and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic” which took place on 10, 12 and 17 March 2021. This paper is based on the discussions held at the webinars. It identifies and documents the key issues to inform stakeholders, and serves as a reference for the work of FAO and other development actors in the region. The presentations and discussions focused on the role of women in Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan) and South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia), but also highlighted cases from the Russian Federation, other Eastern European countries (Belarus, Republic of Moldova and Ukraine), the Western Balkans (Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Serbia) and Turkey. This summary lists examples of promising practices in the region and beyond to improve the socio-economic opportunities of rural women and young people. In addition, based on the discussions of all three webinars, the summary offers a range of policy recommendations that can be deployed by FAO and Members.

No results found.The purpose of this manual is to give the reader a foundation of practical knowledge regarding all aspects of Pacific oyster cultivation. It is targeted at new entrants to the market wishing to establish a farm, and existing operators who wish to develop their farms and explore new cultivation techniques. The methodologies described can be applied both to low-tech, low budget, small-scale farming operations and to high-tech, big budget, industrial-scale aquaculture production enterprises. This guide focuses on the functional expertise and technical equipment required to construct and manage an operational farm in the diverse environmental and physical locations in which they can be situated, from the initial stages of finding and selecting a suitable site, to the conclusion of the first production cycle and harvesting the crop. The manual contains a brief introduction which describes the relevance of the species with regards to global aquaculture production figures and how it can form an important part of future food production strategies. Chapter 2 describes the anatomy and biology of Crassostrea gigas and gives an indication as to the environmental conditions in which the species thrives as well as the pathologies and predators that can result in poor health leading to potential mortalities. Chapter 3 deals with all aspects of undertaking a survey of potential oyster farming sites and what data should be collected and examined to assess a site’s suitability, but also which areas are best suited to different cultivation techniques. After this, Chapter 4 introduces the main farming techniques that will be described in detail in the following chapters, which includes off-bottom cultivation, on-bottom cultivation, and suspended cultivation, and gives details of some of the most common cultivation equipment necessary to undertake these operations. The techniques and strategies necessary to procure seed oysters and how to develop them through the nursery stage are also introduced. This includes the basic principles of upwelling, which then leads into Chapter 5, which provides a detailed description of how to build and operate one particular example of a Floating Upwelling System (Flupsy) which is suitable for use in remote but sheltered conditions. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 constitute the main body of the manual and provide an in-depth look into the three major cultivation techniques that this guide concentrates on: “Farming with trestles and bags in the intertidal zone”, “On-bottom cultivation in the intertidal or subtidal zone” and “Offshore longline cultivation”. -
