Forests and woodlands in the United Republic of Tanzania play an important role in the country’s economy and in nature conservation, ensuring environmental and livelihood opportunities for communities, by providing a variety of products and services However, forest degradation and deforestation are among the key challenges faced by the forestry sector This situation tends to threaten and undermine the sector’s potential for its contribution to conservation, poverty alleviation and economic development objectives Against this background, the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania requested that FAO provide support to review national forestry policy The forestry policy review process started in 2017 and was completed in February 2018 and the new draft forest policy was produced and submitted to the Government However, forest sector management challenges persisted, including uncoordinated and fragmented implementation of forest sector plans and programmes In addition, there was insufficient human and institutional capacity, self financing and intersectoral cooperation to achieve the desired outputs and benefits for forestry development at national and local levels In view of this, the Government requested that FAO provide further assistance to address the implementation mechanism of forestry policy in particular, to develop a national forest policy implementation strategy, and to review the national Forest Management Act of 2002.

Under project TCP/SEY/3603, FAO supported the Government of Seychelles by providing capacity building for the preparation and implementation of a National Forest Inventory (NFI) in order to contribute to the national economy through poverty reduction, environmental sustainability and the sustainable development of its people. The project aimed to introduce a sound data collection system in Seychelles, and to improve transparency and consistency by providing international standards for reporting purposes. The project was implemented by MEECC and had three main outputs: i) national capacity for implementing an integrated forest land and tree resources assessment established; ii) strengthened national capacity in Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) analysis for the mapping and monitoring of forests; and iii) national capacity in field data collection and analysis developed (including biophysical and socioeconomic aspects).

Jordan has small forest cover of about 86 000 hectares, representing about one percent of the total area of the country However, forests play a vital role in environmental conservation and in tackling growing environmental challenges of climate change, desertification and biodiversity losses Although their direct economic contribution is not significant, many rural people still rely on forests for fuelwood, grazing of their animals, and the collection of medicinal plants and other non timber forest products Jordan has recognized the need to regulate and control the use of this important resource since the onset of the 20 th century A Forestry Directorate ( was established in the early twenties of the last century, and the first Forest Act was issued in 1923 supportive to policies of conservational nature Over 90 percent of the country forests are publicly owned and managed by the state in accordance with the principles of the Forest Act Despite the existence of a regulatory framework of conservation, forests have experienced continuous degradation, due to urbanization, encroachment of agriculture on forest lands and repeated cycles of drought Against this background, the Government of Jordan requested that FAO provide assistance to develop a national forest policy, in order to provide an enabling environment and guidance for country driven forest sector development.
