Synopsis (short abstract) The Action Groups (AGs) of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture (GACSA) are groups with a specific and defined purpose. They can consist of members of the Alliance and other interested stakeholders. There are a number of processes to facilitate the creation of the Alliance. Action groups have been created to support the identification of the objectives, key priority areas of work and early action of the Alliance. They will also be encouraged to engage in regional and thematic progra mmes. The structure of the Alliance will be sufficiently flexible to enable participants to organize additional working groups, actions and programmes objectives. An AG shall support the implementation of the Programme of work (PoW) of the Alliance. Its tasks will be defined by the thematic priorities adopted by the Strategic Committee (SC).

    To enable people to achieve food security and for food producers to improve their livelihoods, there is a need for sustainable increases in agricultural productivity; for reducing food losses and waste; for all food systems to be more resilient and able to adapt to climate change; and for enabling agriculture to contribute to the reduction and removal of greenhouse gas emissions, where possible. Members of the Alliance recognize the urgent need to act at scale and to contribute towards three asp irational outcomes: i. Sustainable and equitable increases in agricultural productivity and incomes;ii. Greater resilience of food systems and farming livelihoods; andiii. Reduction and/or removal of greenhouse gas emissions associated with agriculture (including the relationship between agriculture and ecosystems), where possible.

    The IAG supports the work of GACSA members in their efforts to contribute to agreed vision and goals of GACSA, and its purpose to improve the effectiveness, and ultimately to help increase the volume, of public and private investments that support the three pillars of climate-smart agriculture: • Achieve sustainable increases in the productivity of food systems in the face of climate change. • Adapt people’s livelihoods, especially women and smallholder farmers that are threatened by c limate change. • Reduce environmental impacts of agriculture, especially greenhouse gas emissions, and help stop deforestation as a result of agriculture.

    The Knowledge Action Group (KAG) of the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture (GACSA) is one of the three action groups supported by the Alliance. The functions of the KAG are: Increasing and promoting knowledge, research and development into technologies, practices, and policy approaches for climate-smart agriculture; practices and technology sharing and cooperation; improving communication and information sharing among participants; and outreach, extension, and technical assistance.
