    Despite their critical role in agrifood systems, millions of rural women face significant challenges to access resources, information, services and opportunities. They cope with excessive work burden and are underrepresented in institutions and decision-making processes. Moreover, they experience higher rates of food insecurity and are disproportionately affected by health, economic and environmental crises. Closing the gender gap in farm productivity and the wage gap in agrifood systems employment would increase global gross domestic product by 1 percent. This would reduce global food insecurity by about 2 percentage points, reducing the number of food insecure people by 45 million. FAO has extensive expertise in advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment in agrifood systems and rural development to eliminate poverty and promote inclusive rural transformation for a better life.

    This report showcases gender equality and women’s empowerment highlights in 2022 and 2023 and is divided into global and regional highlights. Its overall objective is to share major achievements, good practices and lessons learned in 2022–2023 and to guide FAO’s upcoming work to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment. Gender equality and women’s empowerment is a cross-cutting theme that is inextricably linked to FAO's mandate and the priorities defined by its Strategic Framework (2022–2031). The FAO Policy on Gender Equality (2020–2030) states that “persisting inequalities between women and men are a major obstacle to agriculture and rural development and that eliminating these disparities is essential to building sustainable and inclusive food systems and resilient and peaceful societies”.

    Despite years of progress and global commitments, gender disparities and discrimination in food security persist around the world, particularly affecting women and girls in vulnerable situations. To address these issues, the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) included the development of a set of Voluntary Guidelines on Gender Equality and Women’s and Girls’ Empowerment in the context of Food Security and Nutrition in its 2020–2023 Multi-Year Programme of Work (MYPoW). The Guidelines, which were prepared under this project, aimed to (i) support CFS Member States, development partners and other stakeholders to advance the rights of women and girls, as well as gender equality and women’s and girls’ empowerment (GEWGE) in their efforts to eradicate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition; and (ii) to provide guidance to countries as they work to contribute to the achievement of CFS’s vision and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2 (Zero Hunger) and 5 (Gender Equality).
