The FAO yearbook of fishery statistics – Captures production is a compilation of statistics on nominal catches of fish, crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic animals, residues and plants. Beginning with Volume 82, the normal catch statistics include only the production from capture fisheries with the exclusion of aquaculture production. Former volumes of the yearbook contain, catches and aquaculture statistics combined. The statistics are presented by country or territory, species, major fishi ng areas and year, and for various aggregations. In order to provide complete coverage of catch statistics through the world, where officially reported national statistics are lacking or are considered unreliable FAO makes estimates based on the best information available.

Digital excellence in agriculture in Europe and Central Asia
Good practices in the field of digital agriculture - Stocktaking report
    2021

The present report is the outcome of the joint call on good practices on Digital Excellence in Agriculture, organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Office for Europe and Office for CIS and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations Office for Europe and Central Asia. The document presents a summary version of the 171 eligible submissions of good practices and innovative solutions advancing the digital transformation of agriculture in Europe and Central Asia. This call complements the joint FAO-ITU review on the Status of Digital Agriculture in 18 countries of Europe and Central Asia (ITU-FAO, 2020)1 and provides evidence on how Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play an emerging role in the agriculture landscapes of the regions, acting as an engine for agricultural development. However, the adoption of digital technologies in agriculture differs from country to country, and from region to region. The review in the 18 countries highlighted that smallholder farmers have yet to experience the widespread benefits of this digital transformation, and they are lagging behind when it comes to the adoption of digital agriculture solutions and innovations due to lack of trust in the potential of ICTs, limited digital skills, connectivity issues and restricted availability of ICT-based solutions to utilize and scale up. Realizing the full potential of digital agriculture transformation requires identifying, sharing and implementing best practices and proven solutions across countries, involving all actors in participatory processes.

The completion of this comprehensive harmonized soil information database will improve estimation of current and future land potential productivity, help identify land and water limitations, and enhance assessing risks of land degradation, particularly soil erosion. The HWSD contributes sound scientific knowledge for planning sustainable expansion of agricultural production and for guiding policies to address emerging land competition issues concerning food production, bio-energy demand and thre ats to biodiversity. This is of critical importance for rational natural resource management and in making progress towards achieving Millennium Development goals of eradicating hunger and poverty and addressing the food security and sustainable agricultural development, especially with regard to the threats of global climate change and the needs for adaptation and mitigation. This digitized and online accessible soil information system will allow policy makers, planners and experts to over come some of the shortfalls of data availability to address the old challenges of food production and food security and plan for new challenges of climate change and accelerated natural resources degradation.
