Synopsis (short abstract) Current (2000) and projected (2015) woodfuel consumption patterns and supply potentials in continental Southeast Asia are analysed and mapped applying the Woodfuel Integrated Supply/Demand Overview Mapping (WISDOM) methodology. Combined with poverty data, the study helps define areas where poor rural and suburban populations that depend primarily on woodfuels for their subsistence energy supply are likely to suffer severe shortages, adding an indicator to the mapping of extreme poverty a nd a new tool for poverty alleviation policies and forestry and energy development planning. Integrating several cartographic layers with multi-source field data provides maps of woody biomass stocking and potential sustainable productivity in 2000 and 2015 at a spatial resolution of less than 1 km. Woody biomass consumption maps matching the resolution of supply maps, coupled with likely population distribution in 2015 and model projections of woodfuel consumption, give future consump tion scenarios. Combining these yields balance maps of woodfuel deficit and surplus areas. This study is a starting point for expanding work in the agro-energy sector, which can benefit from the approach, the GIS analytical environment, the additional thematic layers and the nexus with forestry, energy and poverty alleviation issues.

Given the importance of woodfuels in providing energy for both traditional and modern industries, as well as their relevance in forestry, energy and rural development contexts, woody biomass is an important resource that, when sustainably managed, can have positive impacts on the environment, forests, social and economic development.

The two waves of refugees from the Central African Republic has provoked one of the most severe humanitarian crises in Central Africa and in the South of Chad. The different camps around the city of Goré host a population of more than 90 000 individuals of which 35% are refugees, 21% are repatriates and 44% are autochthones. This population is dependent on woodfuel for cooking, heating and lighting. This has increased pressure on the environment due to tree felling, wood collection and the conversion of forestland to agricultural land. FAO and UNHCR initiated a joint rapid woodfuel assessment in May 2017 to determine the supply and demand of woodfuel resources in the area. The assessment had four components: 1) an assessment of the woodfuel demand for cooking, heating and economic activities 2) an identification of current technologies and practices in use for cooking and potential bioenergy feedstocks in the area of interest 3) an assessment of the potential woodfuel supply in the area of interest 4) and the establishment of recommendations for planning interventions to improve clean energy access, promote sustainable forest management, support afforestation and reforestation measures and contribute to building resilience of affected populations in the area around the city of Goré.

With food insecurity, climate change and deforestation and forest degradation remaining key global issues, this paper highlights the role of sustainable woodfuel in improving food security. Food insecurity and a high dependence on woodfuel as a primary cooking fuel are characteristics common to vulnerable groups of people in developing regions of the world.With adequate policy and legal frameworks in place, woodfuel production and harvesting can be sustainable and a main source of green energy. Moreover, the widespread availability of woodfuel, and the enormous market for it, presents opportunities for employment and for sustainable value chains, providing further rationale for promoting this source of energy. This paper explains how sustainable woodfuel is closely linked to food security and provides insights in how the linkages could be strengthened at all stages of woodfuel production, trade and use.
