Synopsis (short abstract) The Advisory Committee on Fisheries Research held its sixth session in Rome, Italy, from 17 to 20 October 2006. The session covered many important topics including small-scale fisheries, fish utilization and trade, and aquaculture and provided recommendations to further guide the future work of the FAO Fisheries and Aquaculture Department not only on research but also on policy matters. The Committee commended the work of FAO in aquaculture and welcomed the timely inclusion of fish s pecies in the Programme of Work of the FAO Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. It discussed a number of future priorities for consideration at its next meeting.

    The FAO Advisory Committee on Fisheries Research (ACFR) held its Fourth Session in Rome from 10 to 13 December 2002. The Committee welcomed the attention and prominence given by the World Summit on Sustainable Development 2002 (WSSD 2002) to fisheries issues and provided detailed guidance on how to operationalize the time-bound goals in fisheries of WSSD 2002 in the context of responsible fisheries. The Committee mended the establishment of an ACFR working party on small-scale marine fisheri es to elaborate a draft research agenda and undertake an evaluation of the role and importance of these fisheries. It also designated the building of human capacity as its next “mega-priority cross-cutting issue”.

    The FAO Advisory Committee on Fisheries Research held its fifth session in Rome from 12 to 15 October 2004. The Committee appreciated the extensive range of research activities undertaken by the FAO Fisheries Department and its partners and provided guidance to foster this work, particularly in aquaculture and inland fisheries as well as in fish utilization and trade. The Committee commended the work of its Working Parties on Small-scale Fisheries and Human Capacity Development and recommended that the Strategic Framework on Human Capacity Development be presented to the twenty-sixth session of the Committee on Fisheries in March 2005 in order to create greater awareness on the subject and encourage the use of the Strategic Framework. The Committee agreed on a work programme for 2005/2006.
