Major topics discussed included (i) the status and potential of fisheries and aquaculture in Asia and the Pacific, (ii) selected issues of regional importance including the increasing amount of low value/trash fish as a percentage of total marine capture and a co-management approach to fisheries involving a partnership between government an d local communities, (iii) policy challenges and emerging issues in the region and (iv) and the work plan for the next biennium. -

The publication reports the proceedings of the APFC session held in Noosaville, Queensland, Australia from 15 to 19 May 2000. Representatives of 25 member nations and observers from eight international, intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations were present. The meeting reviewed the state of forestry in the region and FAO field programmes. It also discussed activities of the APFC ad hoc working group on sustainable forest management and implementation of the code of practice f or forest harvesting in Asia-Pacific countries among a range of issues dealing with the sustainable use of forests in the region. These included discussions on the regional initiative for the development and implementation of criteria and indicators for sustainable management of dry forests in Asia and the results of a study on logging bans in the region. The document also lists a summary of the 26 recommendations made by the commission session. -

Major topics discussed were: APFIC's geographical coverage and mandate and related membership issues; progress reports on the intersessional activities of APFIC; outcomes of the workshop on fishing capacity management and illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and the workshop on certificatio n schemes for capture fisheries and aquaculture; and preparations for the regional consultative forum meeting and the thirtieth session of APFIC to be held in August 2008. A summary of the main recommendations and decisions are included in the session report.
