Synopsis (short abstract) Kenya decision makers have to deal with so many uncertainties from multiple directions that prioritizing interventions and holding a straight course prove a daunting task. In the next decades, population growth, urbanization, smart technological innovations and adoptions, increased movements of people and goods, not to mention climate change, will thoroughly transform Kenya society, in ways that are often unpredictable. This report looks out to 2050 and presents alternative scenarios, or plausible portrays, of the future of the cattle and poultry sectors in Kenya. The government of Kenya, with support from FAO and USAID, engaged a multitude of stakeholders in a conversation around the knowns and unknowns of the future, such as past and projected trends of societal and livestock dynamics, current policy priorities, technology uptake and institutional changes.

    This brief summarises available evidence on the impact of cattle and poultry on the environment in Kenya, building on available research reports and papers. It explores the correlations between livestock and greenhouse gases; livestock and water; livestock and grasslands; and livestock and biodiversity. When data is available, it provides specific evidence of the impact of cattle and poultry production systems on the environment. These were characterized by national stakeholders - including the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources and the Ministry of Health - as part of the implementation of a One Health approach aimed at assessing the current and long-term impact of livestock on the economy and people’s livelihoods, on public health and on the environment.

    The Kenyan cattle and poultry sector widely affects society. It contributes to livelihoods, provides food and nutrition, is a major consumer of natural resources, and causes public health threats through zoonoses. The cattle and poultry sector is anticipated to undergo rapid growth and transformation in the coming decades, because the anticipated population and economic growth, which will provide major incentives for increased production and productivity in the livestock sector. The longer-term future of Kenyan livestock, and of the cattle and poultry sectors in particular, is still in the making and can be shaped by informed decisions taken today. To understand what different trajectories of the transformation of the cattle sector might imply, we must review the current impact of different systems today. This brief is a summary on the current impacts of cattle systems on the livelihoods, environment and public health.
