    The Newsletter is an initiative by the National Biosafety Project (Implementation of the National Biosafety Framework in Accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety). This project is implemented by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment and the Food and Agriculture Organization. This newsletter will be a platform for experts, the academia and students to share scientific findings and perceptions on Biosafety. This newsletter which will be in English, Sinhalese and Tamil will provide awareness on Biosafety which is important with regard to the production of Genetically Modified Organisms including Genetically Modified plants to increase crop productivity and value addition to products. In addition the benefits of Genetically Modified products in the Pharmaceutical industry and in human health are also included in the newsletter

    During the XXXII Regional FAO Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, held in Buenos Aires in March 2012, one of the issues proposed for the agenda and agreed upon by the participants was that “FAO will organize a broad and dynamic debate with the participation of the civil society and academia to discuss the concept of food sovereignty, the meaning of which has been not been agreed upon by FAO Member States and the United Nations System.” (FAO, 2012, paragraph 25) To this end, this ad h oc document, prepared by the consultant Gustavo Gordillo, contains information and analysis on: a) evolution in the use of the concepts of food and nutrition security and food sovereignty; b) food and nutrition security and food sovereignty: antagonistic or complementary concepts?; c) conclusions and topics for discussion at a regional level. In the present document, these three points are summarized and analysed in relation to one another.

    Le présent chapitre porte sur l’agriculture en Afrique subsaharienne en s’attachant plus particulièrement aux perspectives et enjeux pour la décennie à venir. Il examine la performance du secteur, décrit le contexte dans lequel opèrent actuellement les marchés, présente des projections quantitatives détaillées à moyen terme pour la décennie 2016-25, et évalue les principaux risques et incertitudes. Les perspectives de l’agriculture en Afrique subsaharienne s’inscrivent dans un contexte dominé pa r plusieurs mégatendances qui façonnent le développement du secteur. Parmi elles, on peut citer la croissance démographique rapide, l’urbanisation et la diversification rurale, qui vont de pair avec une transformation structurelle propice à l’emploi non agricole au détriment de l’emploi agricole, la montée en puissance de la classe moyenne et l’intérêt croissant (au niveau local et mondial) pour les terres agricoles du continent. Les perspectives de l’agriculture sont globalement positives, mais pourraient être encore améliorées grâce à une action systématique des pouvoirs publics et des investissements stratégiques, en particulier dans les infrastructures rurales.
