Synopsis (short abstract) This guide includes a selection of shark and ray species occurring in the Wider Caribbean Region, that is the waters of the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the waters of the Atlantic Ocean adjacent thereto. In total, 41 shark and 20 ray species selected as being most relevant to commercial fisheries or vulnerable to exploitation due to their life history characteristics, are included. Of these, 29 shark and 9 ray species are presented in a full species card and depicted with a colour illustra tion and photo. Additionally, short accounts of 12 shark and 11 ray species that are less common in the region and could be misidentified with more common species, are also included. These are depicted with a black and white illustration and key distinguishing features are highlighted allowing for easy and accurate identification in the field. This guide is intended to help fishery workers collecting catch data in the field in the identification of the sharks and rays they might encounter for th e specific purpose of improving the quality of catch and landings data.

    This publication covers 16 shark species that are globally distributed and are of major importance owing to either their conservation status or because they are a main target for the international trade in the fins. This guide focuses on fresh to partially dried first dorsal fins, pectoral fins and whole caudal fins. The species are arranged in taxonomic order. For each species, a fact sheet instructs the user on the relevant diagnostic features and measurements of the dorsal, pectoral and cauda l fins, showing a colour illustration of the whole shark, a distribution map and a photographic set of fins. For some species, photographs of pelvic, second dorsal and anal fins are also provided where available. A practical and methodological section is included, guiding the users step by step through the identification of shark fins in different scenarios. It contains the user manual of the software iSharkFin and a practical protocol for the collection of the photographs as well as how to take the main technical measurements and the genetic samples.

    The present field guide is designed to assist in the identification of pelagic sharks and rays of the Western Indian Ocean that are major, moderate, or minor importance to fisheries. It encompasses the offshore, high seas portion of FAO Fishing Area 51. The Western Indian Ocean pelagic elasmobranch fauna is currently represented by thirty four shark species and seven ray species. This field guide includes full species accounts for all known species, although it is acknowledged that some vagrant species not included here may on occasion be caught. Each species is described, depicted with a colour illustration and photo, and key distinguishing features of similar-looking species occurring in the area are highlighted allowing for easy and accurate identification in the field. This field guide is intended to help fishery workers collecting catch data in the field in the identification of the sharks and rays they are likely to encounter. It is conceived to be updatable, offering the possibi lity to add additional species accounts as new information becomes available.

    This volume presents a fully illustrated field guide for the identification of the sharks and rays most relevant to the fisheries of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. A total of 49 sharks and 45 batoids reliably reported for the region are listed and those common in the fisheries or likely to be found through fishing operations are fully treated (44 sharks and 33 batoids). Included here are the first confirmed reports for the region of Hemigaleus microstoma, Carcharhinus dussumieri, Aetomylaeus vesp ertilio, Himantura fai, Mobula japanica and an undescribed Dasyatis sp. The guide includes a fully illustrated keys to those orders and families that occur in the region. Each species account includes: at least one annotated illustration of the species highlighting its relevant identification characters; basic information on nomenclature, synonyms and possible misidentifications; FAO, common and local names; basic information on size, habitat and biology, importance to fisheries, and distributio n. Colour plates for a large number of the species are included.
