No results found.The Provincial Aquaculture Development Project (LAO/97/007) is funded as part of a UNDP country programme for rural development. The project is government executed through the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, with technical and management assistance provided by FAO. The project duration is three years (November 1997 – December 2000). LAO/97/007 follows on from previous UNDP/FAO aquaculture development projects that had started aquaculture activities and established feasibility. D uring these previous projects it was emphasised that the capacity of the government Livestock and Fisheries service to extend aquaculture on a wider scale was extremely weak. This has been due to a variety of reasons: • Poor accessibility of rural areas, lack of roads and government vehicles. • Difficulty in co-ordinating and managing national scale initiatives due to provincial autonomy. • Previous restrictions on inter-province travel • Lack of government funding for rural livestoc k and fisheries extension • Insufficient staff at Provincial and district level • Lack of capacity and poor incentivisation/management of district livestock officers. • Shortage of fish fingerlings and lack of distribution network during peak seasonal demand. LAO/97/007 is working in five provinces: Oudomxay, Sayaboury, Xieng Khouang, Savannakhet and Sekong Provinces. Within these provinces, there are 14 districts involved with a total of 37 farmer groups (total number of families 44 0). The target provinces are distributed along the length of the country and incorporate both lowland and upland environments (see Figure 1). Additional technical assistance and training is also provided to Government Livestock and Fisheries staff in other provinces. The project objectives are to: • Improve fish fry production from government hatcheries through structural improvements and training • Encourage fish fry production by farmers/entrepreneurs through extension of simple techniques and farmer training. • Develop the capacity of Department of Livestock and Fisheries staff to plan and conduct extension of fish culture techniques to farmers. • Form farmers groups and introduce them to fish culture as part of Department of Livestock and Fisheries extension process. • Assist farmers and hatchery entrepreneurs in their activities through provision of fish fry, broodstock and access to credit facilities. -

This Sturgeon Hatchery Manual includes the latest available scientific research findings and experiences and compiles advice given in earlier manuals and handbooks on sturgeon culture and reproduction practices. This document can be considered an update of the Sturgeon Breeding and Rearing Handbook (Chebanov, Galich and Chmyr, 2004), which was published in the Russian language. The Sturgeon Hatchery Manual was prepared in response to numerous requests for practical guidance on this s ubject from the Central Asian and Caucasus region to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This manual is targeted particularly at sturgeon farmers, sturgeon hatchery operators, hatchery technicians, and fisheries and aquaculture managers involved in sturgeon aquaculture development and the restocking and rehabilitation of sturgeon populations in the countries around the basins of the Black and Caspian seas. It aims to provide a practical handbook of mode rn sturgeon hatchery practices and management. The manual is available in the English, Russian and Turkish languages. The manual starts with a chapter on the taxonomy, biology, distribution and life histories of Azov-Black and Caspian Sea sturgeons. Subsequent chapters discuss the following aspects of sturgeon hatchery practices: hatchery design, collection and transportation of wild broodstock, broodstock management, spawning and gamete processing, fry and fingerling rearing, prod uction of live feeds, the technology of artificial reproduction, ecological- morphological and ethological-physiological express estimation of larval and fingerling (fry) viability, release of fingerlings into natural waterbodies, the formation of domesticated broodstock, basic sanitation and fish health measures, tagging, and early sexing and maturity determination in live sturgeons using ultrasound techniques. The manual also contains an extensive list of references, a list of Acip enseriformes and numerous figures, photographs and tables to support the guidance given on the various hatchery practices -

No results found.The Aquaculture and Inland Fisheries Project, (AIFP) otherwise known as AnnexII of the Nigerian Special Programme for Food Security (NSPFS) was operational between 18 July 2003 and 30 June 2006 for 35 months. The AIFP’s objectives included compiling an inventory and data base of inland water bodies, fish farms and feed mills, providing technical assistance to private fish farmers and assisting artisanal fisherman in community-based management of inland waters. A good linkage was forged between p rivate fish hatcheries and the stocking of lakes for increased fish production. Efforts were also made towards reduction of post harvest loss of fish through improved fish smoking demonstrations. The project was successful in creating increased public awareness on aquaculture and fisheries bringing them to become national development priorities.

No results found.The FAOSTAT emissions database is composed of several data domains covering the categories of the IPCC Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector of the national GHG inventory. Energy use in agriculture is additionally included as relevant to emissions from agriculture as an economic production sector under the ISIC A statistical classification, though recognizing that, in terms of IPCC, they are instead part of the Energy sector of the national GHG inventory. FAO emissions estimates are available over the period 1961–2018 for agriculture production processes from crop and livestock activities. Land use emissions and removals are generally available only for the period 1990–2019. This analytical brief focuses on overall trends over the period 2000–2018. -

No results found.Due to the growing demand for higher quality and safer food products by consumers, it has become more common for both importing countries and domestic buyers to require certification for the use of good agricultural practices (GAP) in food production and distribution. As such, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries have a common GAP framework for the production, harvesting and postharvest handling of fresh fruits and vegetables (ASEAN GAP). The ASEAN GAP aim to prevent or minimize hazards associated with (i) food safety, (ii) environmental impacts, (iii) worker health, safety and welfare and (iv) produce quality. Several ASEAN countries have developed voluntary GAP standards or follow standards that are modelled on the ASEAN GAP. In Cambodia, however, there is an urgent need to develop and implement national GAP in order to comply with international requirements and bolster trade, particularly within the ASEAN free trade area. Food safety standards in Cambodia have largely focused on end products and are often not considered mandatory. However, stakeholders in Cambodia’s agriculture sector have recognized that in order to compete with other ASEAN countries and benefit from access to the common market area, GAP need to be better incorporated into all farming activities. The development and implementation of Cambodia’s GAP (CamGAP) will create a demand for reliable, high-quality inputs, increase the value of farms and develop the skills of farmers. Ultimately, the formulation of CamGAP will draw upon concepts in the ASEAN GAP, which were formulated based on international regulatory frameworks, including those of the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC), Codex Alimentarius Commission and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). Given the challenges being faced in Cambodia, this project was designed to institute CamGAP for horticultural produce and operationalize the associated national certification and accreditation systems. This, in the long term, is expected to promote the optimization of farming resources, as well as access to market opportunities for producers.
