    Farmers in Haiti traditionally apply a number of actions, before and after natural hazards hit in order to reduce the impacts particularly on high-market value products. For example, farmers can anticipate banana harvesting to mitigate the losses in case of natural hazards occurrence. The integrated package of practices to reduce hazard impacts on bananas aims at protecting the highest possible percentage of harvest from being spoilt by hurricanes, winds or washed away by, floods, thus ensuring people’s income and their livelihoods.

    The Rural Development Division (SDA) of FAO tackles the issue of disaster risk management from an institutional perspective within the context of Rural Development and Decentralization. This interim report summarises the main issues, findings and recommendations arising from the first phase of SDA’s work on DRM, including a first consolidation and comparative analysis of a literature review, case studies and the workshop discussions.
