BookletMonitoring the challenges of marine and inland small-scale fisherfolks in Ghana
Findings from an organization-level survey conducted as part of the United Nations Decade of Family Farming
2023Also available in:
No results found. The study provides a description of Ghana's marine and inland Small-Scale Fisheries Organizations (SSFOs), detailing their characteristics, challenges, and awareness of the Voluntary Guidelines for Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication. The report outlines the survey methodology, and covers organization profiles, members' livelihoods, and capacity-building needs. It also provides a snapshot of Ghana's higher-level ("umbrella") fisheries organizations. Findings indicate that Ghanaian SSFOs, mainly informal with low assets endowment, face challenges like disorganization, lack of trust and lack of resources, leading to minimal reliance on collective sales and activities. -
Book (series)Evaluation of the project "Creating an enabling environment for securing sustainable small-scale fisheries"
Project code: GCP/GLO/965/SWE
2023Also available in:
No results found. It was found that the SIDA-SSF project was robustly designed, relevant and responsive to needs and emerging opportunities to further the implementation of the SSF Guidelines. Most notable achievements include greater awareness of the SSF Guidelines at all levels, the preparation of National Plans of Action for SSF (NPOA-SSF) in selected countries, the operationalization of the Advisory and Regional Advisory Groups under the SSF Global Strategic Framework (SSF-GSF), the Illuminating Hidden Harvests (IHH) study and the celebration of the International Year for Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA) 2022. The elaboration of a monitoring system for the implementation of the SSF Guidelines has progressed. The project has influence in building the capacity of SSF organizations and actors to represent the interests of small-scale fishers and fishworkers at national level and in international fora. Partnerships are a cornerstone of project implementation and enabling to move the SSF agenda forward.Recommendations include actions to be taken by the SIDA-SSF project Core Team and FAO. They emphasize approaches and priorities, thematic areas, collaborations and partnerships, social inclusion and targeting, project administration and oversight, learning and knowledge sharing, and finally the place of SSF in “blue” narratives and initiatives as areas to build on the project results and achieve sustainability and long-term impact. -
Book (series)Involving the People
Democratizing the implementation and monitoring of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication
2022Also available in:
No results found. This publication describes a small international initiative to examine how local communities can undertake the above tasks of democratization with specific reference to the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication. Communities may have been active participants in proposing inputs which were aggregated and shared in the formulation of the guidelines, yet their role in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the adopted texts is peripheral. At best, they watch implementation undertaken in their name, but as passive observers. A radical change is needed in order to mainstream community participation into the implementation and monitoring of guidelines of the type described above. There is a need to “take back voluntary guidelines to the community”; demystify their contents; assess with the community what indicators will be utilized to evaluate the progress of implementation; and think through with them the nature of tools to be used for this purpose. Basically, the call is for a democratization of the implementation and monitoring of voluntary guidelines, making them by, for and of the community.
