The Understanding Antimicrobial Use in Food and Agriculture series is a compilation of country reports, each describing antimicrobial use (AMU) practices and awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the livestock sector. The data presented in these reports was obtained through knowledge-attitude-practices (KAP) field surveys conducted with farmers of priority livestock production systems, field veterinarians, veterinary pharmacies, and feed mills. This issue of the series summarizes the results of interviews performed in Serbia between June and October 2022.

The Understanding Antimicrobial Use in Food and Agriculture series is a compilation of country reports, each describing antimicrobial use (AMU) practices and awareness of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in the livestock sector. The data presented in these reports was obtained through knowledge-attitudes-practices (KAP) field surveys conducted with farmers of priority livestock production systems, field veterinarians, veterinary pharmacies, and feed mills. This issue of the series summarizes the results of interviews performed in Armenia between March and October 2021.In Armenia, surveys targeted 500 farms of priority livestock production systems (chickens, pigs, bees, and backyard), 100 veterinarians, 51 veterinary pharmacies and 10 feed mills. Participants were interviewed face-to-face between 27 March and 29 October 2021. Farm surveys were conducted along with the collection of faecal and milk samples for AMR testing. After completion of the survey, participants were provided with an information leaflet on the use of antibiotics in livestock, and misconceptions were explained to them. This report is the first of its kind to provide a comprehensive overview of AMU in the livestock sector in Armenia, including the sources of antibiotics, the main use patterns (e.g. common routes of administration; the aim of use, such as treatment, prevention or growth promotion; and the use in different age groups), the main indications of antimicrobial treatment, drugs used in different animal species, the handling of antibiotics, and awareness of AMR. The analysis found important gaps in the knowledge and practices of participants, such as the scarcity of thorough record-keeping, the inappropriate disposal of expired antibiotics, the lack of some biosecurity measures, and the supply of antibiotics without prescriptions. Targeting these gaps in the future could lead to a reduced need for antimicrobials and would support the prudent use of them, thus reducing the risk of AMR development.

The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture 2022
    Towards Blue Transformation
    2022
The 2022 edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture coincides with the launch of the Decade of Action to deliver the Global Goals, the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. It presents how these and other equally important United Nations events, such as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022), are being integrated and supported through Blue Transformation, a priority area of FAO’s new Strategic Framework 2022–2031 designed to accelerate achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in food and agriculture. The concept of Blue Transformation emerged from the Thirty-fourth Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries in February 2021, and in particular the Declaration for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture, which was negotiated and endorsed by all FAO Members. The Declaration calls for support for “an evolving and positive vision for fisheries and aquaculture in the twenty first century, where the sector is fully recognized for its contribution to fighting poverty, hunger and malnutrition.” In this context, Part 1 of this edition of The State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture reviews the world status of fisheries and aquaculture, while Parts 2 and 3 are devoted to Blue Transformation and its pillars on intensifying and expanding aquaculture, improving fisheries management and innovating fisheries and aquaculture value chains. Blue Transformation emphasizes the need for forward-looking and bold actions to be launched or accelerated in coming years to achieve the objectives of the Declaration and in support of the 2030 Agenda. Part 4 covers current and high-impact emerging issues – COVID-19, climate change and gender equality – that require thorough consideration for transformative steps and preparedness to secure sustainable, efficient and equitable fisheries and aquaculture.

In 2019, the international community made significant strides in addressing antimicrobial resistance (AMR), notably with the establishment of the AMR Multi-Partner Trust Fund (AMR MPTF) on 1 August 2019. The Tripartite partnership—comprising the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and the World Health Organization (WHO)—focused on creating a solid operational framework for the Fund. Key activities from April to December 2019 included:- The ad hoc UN Interagency Coordination Group on AMR report transmission;- Development and dissemination of the AMR MPTF leaflet;- High-level meetings and conferences, including a Ministerial Conference in The Netherlands;- Signing of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) and establishment of an AMR MPTF webpage;- Initial financial contributions from the Netherlands and Sweden. The AMR MPTF aims to support the implementation of One Health National Action Plans, providing policy support, technical assistance, and promoting responsible antimicrobial use. Key achievements in 2019 were in administrative organization, technical documentation development, and initial resource mobilization, securing 10 percent of the targeted USD70 million fund. The efforts laid a strong foundation for continued progress in combating AMR through coordinated global action.
