Synopsis (short abstract) The sixth edition of this biennial publication showcases the breadth of work and main achievements and partnerships of FAO Forestry in implementing the FAO Strategic Objectives as well as its linkages to the SDGs, with descriptive information on project and programme delivery and funding resources. It is also intended to serve as a reference for delegates attending the 25th Session of the Committee on Forestry during discussions on programme implementation as well as a resource for new staff, partners and the media to help them better understand FAO's forestry programme and its linkages with other sectors, partners and international processes. Approximately 30 programme activities are documented with a selection of related photographs, with a foreword by the Assistant Director-General of Forestry.

    Within the framework of modern governance, accountability means acknowledging responsibility for delivery. The UN system, as a global public service, needs to set an example by providing information to its member countries, governing bodies, partners and other stakeholders on its major achievements and resources in an easy-to-read format. Yet many of the activities carried out by the UN system in general, and FAO in particular, are not well known. For this reason, FAO Forestry decided in early 2010 to create an attractive biennial publication that would showcase its main achievements and corresponding resources. This publication informs discussions during plenary sessions of the Committee on Forestry (COFO) when reporting on activities, and is also a resource for new staff, partners and the media to better understand FAO’s Forestry programme. During the past biennium, through its dense network of regional, subregional and country offices and from its headquarters in Rome, Italy, FAO h as implemented projects that amount to a total of US$81.5 million, and regular programme normative activities corresponding to approximately US$40 million. The bulk of the project budget is related to Global Environment Facility and UN-REDD projects.

    The Flexible Multi-Partner Mechanism (FMM), as FAO’s main pooled multi-partner flexible funding instrument, enables resource partners to contribute voluntary and less-earmarked financial resources to support the delivery of programmatic results under FAO’s Strategic Framework. This annex contains the key achievements of individual FMM Subprogrammes in 2021, as reported by their respective implementing units. The annex compliments the results presented in The Flexible Multi-Partner Mechanism – 2021 Annual Progress Report.

    The Flexible Multi-Partner Mechanism (FMM), as FAO’s main pooled multi-partner flexible funding instrument, enables resource partners to contribute voluntary and less-earmarked financial resources to support the delivery of programmatic results under FAO’s Strategic Framework. This report highlights the key achievements of the FMM in 2021, both in terms of its accomplishments as a funding mechanism and the delivery of transformative results on the ground through FMM-funded Programmes and Subprogrammes. Throughout the report, progress is presented in the context of the FMM's results framework, following a results-based approach. Success stories are presented to capture the impact of FMM-funded work on the lives of beneficiaries. The report also highlights how Subprogrammes have continued to adhere to the FMM's key principles. Finally, future directions for the coming years are addressed.
