Book (stand-alone)Wood Energy, Climate and Health - International Expert Consultation
Regional Wood Energy Development Programme in Asia - GCP/RAS/154/NET
2000Also available in:
No results found.World energy consumption patterns receive a lot of international attention because of their impact on global climate change. Much less attention is paid to the impacts of emissions from energy use on public health. It has been documented that indoor pollution due to poor combustion technology causes very severe adverse health effects. There is a link between climate and health, because the gaseous emissions which impact on global climate, partly overlap with the emissions which impact on hu man health. Hence, efforts to reduce them will have double benefits. These issues were discussed in the International Expert Consultation on 'Wood Energy, Climate and Health', organised by RWEDP in October 1999 in Phuket, Thailand. The present field document contains the papers, conclusions and recommendations of the consultation. -

Also available in:
No results found. This is the report of the Regional Expert Consultation on Selection Criteria and Priority Rating for Assistance to Traditional Biomass Energy Using Industries, held in Malaysia in January 1996. Traditional biomass energy using industries play an important if not vital role in local economies in many countries in the region by providing local employment as well as making use of local available raw materials. However, at the same time many of these traditional biomass energy-using industries are facing many constraints. This is basically caused by the use of outdated technologies, problems with obtaining credits, invest capital as well as problems with getting assistance and advice from relevant support organizations. Extensive discussions of which the results are described in this report in the form of selection criteria to be used for the selection of those industries which should receive priority for further assistance. These consist of 5 main rural based industries/activities e. g. the brick and rooftile industries, lime burning, the tobacco and sugar industries as well as charcoal making including briquetting and wood drying. Summaries of country statements as well as papers prepared by resource persons give an overview of the status of rural based biomass energy using industries in the regions as well as an overview of potential options for and available support mechanisms/systems for this sector of the industry. Conclusions and recommendations are given which fo cus on mechanisms which can be used for selecting industries as well as the need to improve the database of the sector and for more cooperation and coordination among local organizations as well as international organizations.
