Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetTürkiye: Response overview, December 2023 2024
Also available in:
No results found. On 6 February 2023, two powerful earthquakes struck the southeastern region of Türkiye. The earthquake-affected area, known as Türkiye’s “fertile crescent”, accounted for approximately 15.3 percent of the country’s agricultural gross domestic product and employed 14 percent of its farmers. The significant damages and losses to crops, livestock, fisheries and agricultural infrastructure were estimated at USD 6.3 billion. In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) scaled up its emergency response and launched its three-year Earthquake Response and Recovery Plan (ERRP) with the overall objective of maintaining food production and availability through the restoration of critical agrifood systems and rural livelihoods. This document provides an overview of FAO's response under the ERRP during February–December 2023 as well as planned response until June 2024. It also highlights FAO’s funding requirements to fully implement the ERRP. -
Brochure, flyer, fact-sheetTürkiye and the Syrian Arab Republic: Contributions to the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA) from Belgium, Norway and Sweden 2023
Also available in:
No results found. The earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and the northern part of the Syrian Arab Republic on 6 February 2023 caused immense damages and losses, particularly in the countries’ rural areas. As a result, food consumption gaps have grown among the most vulnerable people. Given the already dire situation in the Syrian Arab Republic and the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Türkiye, there is an urgent need to minimize the suffering and uncertainty among already vulnerable communities. Thanks to contributions from the Governments of Belgium, Norway and Sweden, through SFERA, FAO expanded its support to earthquake‑affected communities in the two countries by providing critical agricultural livelihoods assistance to address both immediate needs as well as longer term effects of the earthquake. -
BookletThe Sudan Emergency Livelihood Response Plan, September 2023–August 2024
Restoring and enhancing food production and strengthening agricultural livelihoods to support farming, herding and fishing communities
2023Also available in:
No results found. On 15 April 2023, an armed conflict erupted between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces in the Sudanese capital Khartoum. Over four months since fighting began, the conflict has since spilled over into the Darfur region and parts of Kordofan and Blue Nile states, reigniting intercommunal violence and causing widespread displacement. Fighting continues to jeopardize the food security and nutrition of millions of people, worsening a highly fragile ecosystem. In response, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) scaled up its response actions and launched a 12-month Emergency Livelihood Response Plan (ELRP). The ELRP, to be implemented from September 2023 to August 2024, requires urgent funding to reach 10.1 million farmers, herders and fishers with vital livelihoods support. This includes distributing emergency seeds, providing livestock, veterinary and fisheries support, and enhancing the adoption of good agricultural practices. The ELRP aims to mitigate the impact of the recent conflict on vulnerable people, address their immedate needs, and enhance their ability to recover and strengthen their resilience. Agriculture remains a lifeline in the Sudan.
