Synopsis (short abstract) Gökova Bay is situated in the eastern Aegean Sea, southwest of Anatolia, Turkey. In 1988, a considerable part of the land and marine areas of Gökova Bay were incorporated into a Special Environmental Protection Area. In addition, six nofishing zones were established in 2010. With over 723 identified marine macroscopic species, 34 of which are protected under national and international treaties, the biodiversity in Gökova Bay is considered to be high. Fishing is an important economic activity in the region and has developed as a small-scale enterprise because of the conditions of the coastline, geography and productivity of the bay, and the conservation status of the area. The fishery in the bay is characterized as a typical multispecies and multigear smallscale fishery that targets both demersal and pelagic species, as in many other Mediterranean countries. To secure the sustainability of the fisheries in the Gökova Bay marine protected area (MPA), a pilot case study on the implementation of the EAF in Gökova Bay was initiated in 2016 within the framework and with the financial support of the FAO Mediterranean Project EastMed. Various stakeholders, including fishery cooperatives, non-governmental organizations, several ministerial and other governmental and public institutions, as well as universities contributed to, and collaborated with, the project. This technical paper presents the EAF baseline report that was prepared to complete the planning phase of the project by defining the scope of the case study. It outlines the available information on the small-scale fisheries in Gökova Bay and documents relevant information about the fishery, the species and geographical areas covered in the case study, the socio-economic profile of the fishery and the institutional arrangements for its management.

    The FAO/WorldFish Center Workshop on Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Assessment of Small-Scale Fisheries (Rome, 20–22 September 2005) was organized jointly by the WorldFish Center and FAO through its FishCode Programme, as a first step in developing a collaborative project towards capacity-building for small-scale fisheries assessment in developing countries. Participants represented various international and national agencies and academic institutions as well as private firms, and were invi ted on the basis of their extensive experience in small-scale fisheries either from a natural or social science background. The Workshop addressed three main tasks through plenary and working group sessions: preliminary development of a framework for interdisciplinary assessment of small-scale fisheries; identification of appropriate approaches, methods and research needs to help fill small-scale fisheries information gaps; and review of an outline implementation strategy for a collaborativ e project on small-scale fisheries.

    The Expert Workshop on gender-equitable small-scale fisheries in the context of the implementation of the SSF Guidelines was held on 28-30 November 2016 in FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy. In keeping with the need expressed by various stakeholders during capacity development on the SSF Guidelines, it was considered important to develop gender guidance to support the application of the SSF Guidelines. It was therefore decided that a Gender Implementation Guide be developed to enhance the underst anding of the gender dimensions of small-scale fisheries and support gender equitable small-scale fisheries. Within this context, the Expert Workshop aimed at presenting and discussing a draft implementation guide (referred to subsequently as Gender Guide or Guide) on how to practically apply the SSF Guidelines in relation to gender issues aimed at supporting: 1. Awareness raising, advocacy and capacity development activities on the application of the relevant principles of the SSF Guidelines , as well as 2. The development and implementation of gender-sensitive sectoral and cross-sectoral policy frameworks and investment plans and programs.

    The Developing Organizational Capacity for Ecosystem Stewardship and Livelihoods in Caribbean Small Scale Fisheries ( StewardFish ) project recognized that there were a number of challenges hindering the engagement of fisherfolk and their organizations in the sustainable management of fisheries in the Caribbean region, including limited capacity of fisherfolk organizations to participate effectively in fisheries governance; insufficient capacity and knowledge of ecosystem stewardship practices for fisheries sustainability among fisherfolk ; inadequate public awareness of ecosystem approaches to support best practices and ensure compliance; inadequate documentation of successful experiences and practices for sustainable fisheries livelihood strategies; and inadequate management and collaboration mechanisms to support fisherfolk leaders in monitoring and evaluating projects. In addressing these constraints, the project supported the implementation of the ten year Strategic Action Programme (SAP) for the Sustainable Management of the Shared Living Marine Resources of the Caribbean and North Brazil Shelf Large Marine Ecosystems (CLME+) in Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines by empowering fisherfolk throughout fisheries value chains to engage in resource management, decision making processes and sustainable livelihoods, with strengthened institutional support at all levels.
