No results found.In Mongolia, the agriculture sector contributed 13 3 percent of gross domestic product ( in 2017 the second largest sector following the mining sector The contribution of the livestock sector to the agriculture GDP was 88 percent Approximately 40 percent of the work force directly depends on the livestock sector and the sector is dominated by an extensive livestock production system dependent on access to grasslands and thus inherently vulnerable to climatic and natural resource management risks and climate change It has been estimated that average annual temperature in Mongolia increased two fold between 1940 and 2013 around three times the global average Climate change has a negative impact on animal productivity, animal health, biodiversity, the quality and amount of feed supply, and the carrying capacity of pastures It has also led to the outbreak of new and re emerging livestock diseases, and a change in disease patterns The absence of policy or market based mechanisms to control livestock numbers and a lack of awareness regarding rangeland degradation has led to increasing herd sizes, producing acute limitations of forage and increasing desertification In 2020 76 9 percent of Mongolia's territory was affected by desertification Permanent pastures and meadows occupy about 110 5 million ha 71 8 percent of the total territory of Mongolia) 65 percent of this pastureland is already degraded to some extent. -

No results found.This publication analyses of the synergies and trade-offs that can occur within climate-smart agriculture (CSA), more specifically between its three pillars: (i) sustainably increasing productivity and incomes in agriculture, (ii) building resilience of and adapting food and agriculture systems to climate change, (iii) reducing/removing greenhouse gas emissions, where possible. The aim of this analysis is to develop a systematic characterization of possible synergies and trade-offs in CSA, as well as provide a tool to guide CSA practitioners through the assessment of synergies and trade-offs during the design and planning of CSA strategies or interventions. The ultimate objective is to support strategic decisions that enhance synergies and reduce trade-offs to achieve better results for investments in CSA. -

No results found.From 10–12 October 2017, government and leading private sector representatives attended the regional workshop Climate Action for Agriculture in Asia: Strengthening the role of scientific foresight and CSA in addressing NDC priorities in Bangkok to strengthen the capacities of countries in Asia to achieve their NDC targets for the agriculture and land-use sectors, through improved use of scientific information in sector planning and enhanced public and private sector engagement in accelerating cl imate-smart agricultural (CSA) investments. Based on priority commodities and CSA actions identified in the pre-2020 Roadmaps, participants worked in facilitated country groups to identify needs and opportunities for public-private sector coordination to accelerate investment and finance for CSA, aligned with NDC priorities and targets. The top priority actions needed to address challenges were identified, as were timelines and key entities that are most appropriate to lead and support the imple mentation of priority actions. In the final session country groups presented their pre-2020 roadmaps and private sector engagement strategies and identified concrete next steps that can be taken to turn their roadmaps into reality.

2012The thirtieth session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) was held in Rome, Italy, from 9 to 13 July 2012. The Committee reviewed the issues of an international character and the FAO programme in fisheries and aquaculture, and their implementation. The Committee, while stressing the high value of the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture as a flagship publication, recommended that FAO should provide more support to countries in data collection and quality control, as well as consider a si mpler classification of stock status. The Committee expressed strong support for the standards and norms of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its related instruments and agreed on further effort to facilitate their accessibility and more effective implementation. The Committee agreed on the development of best practice guidelines for traceability. The Committee reiterated its support to FAO’s collaboration with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the World Trade Organization. The Committee reiterated the request for additional assistance for aquaculture development in Africa and Small Island Developing States. The Committee requested FAO to develop a conformity assessment framework for aquaculture certification guidelines as well as a draft strategy paper including a long-term strategic plan for the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and emphasized the specific needs for future work. The Committee urged FAO to reinforce it s emphasis on fish as food, ensure that these aspects were not lost in the global and regional frameworks for ocean conservation and management, and assert its leading role in fisheries and aquaculture in ocean governance. The Committee requested FAO to address the issue of hydrocarbon deposits in the oceans and assess possible threats arising from their development. The Committee called for continuous consultation with all stakeholders in the development of the International Guidelines for Secu ring Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries and agreed on the need to develop implementation strategies for the Guidelines. The Committee agreed that illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing continues to be a persistent and pressing problem adversely impacting on sustainable fisheries and food security. The Committee endorsed the terms of reference for the Ad hoc Working Group for the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures. The Committee requested to convene the second resumed session of the te chnical consultation on the draft Criteria for Flag State Performance. The Committee reiterated its support for the Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels. The Committee agreed that FAO should focus on challenges relevant to its core mandate and must join efforts with partners in better coordination and urged FAO to ensure that fisheries and aquaculture priorities were reflected under the Strategic Objectives. The Committee adopted the revised Rules o f Procedure and endorsed the related changes in current practice. The Committee also approved the Multiyear Programme of Work (MYPOW) 2012–2015. -
