Synopsis (short abstract) The ten countries which border the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden depend to varying degrees on the area for their fish supplies with some countries such as South Yemen being totally dependent on the fish resources while to others, such as Israel and Jordan, the area is of minor importance. Catches of all fish species have been increasing slowly in recent years and in 1986 totalled 60.9 thousand tons from the Red Sea and 99.4 thousand tons from the Gulf of Aden. After reviewing the reso urce assessment and survey work which has been carried out in the area it was concluded that further increases in landings could be achieved on a sustainable basis. However such increases will come from the development of new fisheries and the expansion of the areas presently Fished rather than from traditional fisheries which are, in general, fully exploited. Utilization and marketing problems, particularly with small pelagic and mesopelagic species, however need to be addressed f or the full potential of the area to be realized.

    The fishery research vessel «Dr. Fridtjof Nansen” belongs to the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). It was designed and built for scientific and exploratory investigations of fishery resources of developing countries, under a joint plan with the Fisheries Department of FAO. A list of the vessels operational assignment from 1975 to 1987 is shown on the back cover. The Institute of Marine Research, Bergen is under a subcontract with NORAD responsible for the operation of the vessel, and the various research programmes were planned and conducted jointly with FAO and the relevant fisheries research organizations in the countries concerned. Results of the previous surveys have been presented in a number of cruise-and progress reports under each programme.

    According to the project document, the immediate objective are to aim at improving fishery production in the participating countries to benefit small scale fisheries and at developing the industrial potential; to prepare the ground, identify the means and initiate the reactivation and expansion of the existing marine fisheries and thereby to preserve the fishing communities; and to plan and, where appropriate, design and initiate investment-oriented development schemes. To survey the socio-econo mic aspects of the Red Sea fishing communities in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen, various visits were arranged to these groups along the coast.
