No results found.The FAO Technical Workshop on Deep-sea Fisheries and Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems of the Eastern Central Atlantic took place in Dakar, Senegal, from 8 to 10 November 2016. The meeting was attended by 32 participants who contributed in their individual capacities to the discussions on the subjects of deep-sea fisheries and benthic habitats of the CECAF region. The participants had backgrounds in fisheries management, research, environment, fishing industry, non-governmental organizations, regiona l organizations, and projects. Invited experts provided case studies and examples of deep-sea fisheries management and processes to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) from the north, western-central and south Atlantic regions. The three-day workshop was organized into two main parts, with 2.5 days dedicated to discussions on deep-sea fisheries, and VMEs in the CECAF area (Part 1), and a half-day session specifically dedicated to awareness raising on sponges (Part 2). The deep-sea fisher ies and VME component of the workshop aimed to support the implementation of the FAO International Guidelines on the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas (adopted 2008) in the region, and to increase knowledge and share experiences of the importance of addressing potential impacts from deep-sea bottom contact fisheries on VMEs. Overviews were provided on current global and regional instruments, processes and practices for the management of deep-sea fisheries and protection of VMEs, and their relevance to the CECAF region discussed. Deep-sea fisheries in EEZs and ABNJ were characterized and current available information on benthic habitats were reviewed. This component of the workshop resulted in a suite of advice and recommendations for the CECAF Scientific Sub-Committee to consider for recommendations to the next Committee meeting. The Sponges component of the workshop addressed the objectives of Work Package 8.2 of the SponGES project “Deep-sea Sponge Grounds Ecosystems of the North Atlantic: an integrated approach towards their preservation and sustainable exploitation”, which aims to promote and facilitate dialogue and knowledge transfer between scientists, managers, policy-makers, and stakeholders from the Atlantic region on SponGES, through round-table dialogues. -

No results found.A Workshop to analyse the challenges and propose ways forward for the implementation of the International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-sea Fisheries in the High Seas (adopted in 2008) (FAO Deep-sea Guidelines) was held in Busan, Republic of Korea, from 10 to 12 May 2010. The meeting was attended by participants from a wide range of disciplines, experience and geographic areas. The report is divided in two parts. Part 1 provides the meeting summary and the main conclusions and recommenda tions with respect to general considerations, governance, support to developing countries, management issues, compliance and enforcement, vulnerable marine ecosystems (VMEs) and review and implementation processes. Part 2 contains the background documents on: (i) issues with respect to fisheries management in areas where there are regional fisheries management organizations/arrangements (RFMO/As); (ii) VMEs in areas where there are RFMO/As; and (iii) both topics in areas where there are no RFMO/ As. It was concluded that the current Workshop provided a good opportunity to establish an overall view of implementation and discuss challenges faced. However, given that many states and RFMO/As have only just begun to address many of the provisions in the FAO Deep-sea Guidelines and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Resolutions for the purpose of their implementation it was suggested that additional meetings to evaluate the challenges and potential solutions in the implementation sh ould be planned for the future. Additional evaluations of the implementation of the FAO Guidelines could also encourage relevant parties and stakeholders to continue their efforts on implementation. Specific programmes of work and activities that will be needed to advance implementation of the FAO Deep-sea Guidelines were also developed. -

No results found.The subject matter of this workshop was protection of vulnerable marine ecosystems (VME) in the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC) Area, with the aim of applying global experiences to the regional assessments and to build capacity to protect VMEs and related management issues in the North Pacific Ocean region. The workshop focused on the mitigation of bottom fishing impacts on VMEs within the framework of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) International Guidelines for the Management of Deep-Sea Fisheries in the High Seas. Workshop participants identified historical and existing seamount fisheries that impacted benthic VMEs, with a particular focus on corals. Participants reviewed actions that have already been taken to mitigate VME issues associated with the two areas of seamount fisheries: the Emperor Seamount area of the northwestern Pacific Ocean, and a few seamounts off Canada in the high seas of the northeastern Pacific Ocean. The workshop brought together global experts to advise on methodologies and options for protecting VMEs.
