    The fifth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) Committee on Aquaculture (CAQ) was attended by delegates from eleven Members of the Commission. The session reviewed the status and trends of aquaculture in the region. It appraised the activities carried out during the intersessional period, especially the work performed by the Revitalization Project of the Information System for the Promotion of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SIPAM) and the outcome of the two expert meetings, respectively on the re-establishment of the Network on Environment and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (EAM) and on the merging of the Network on Technology and Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (TECAM) with the Network on Social, Economic and Legal Aspects of Aquaculture in the Mediterranean (SELAM). The Committee agreed that a single subsidiary body, entitled Coordinating Meeting of the Ad Hoc Working Groups (CMWG), be established to replace these networks. It decided that th e CMWG will initially be supported by the following three Ad Hoc Working Groups, on: Marketing, Sustainability, and on Siting and Carrying Capacity. The Committee agreed on the membership, modus operandi and mandate for the CMWG and adopted terms of reference for the Coordinator of each working group. CAQ also reviewed and endorsed a short- and medium-term reference framework for the work of the working groups. It acknowledged the training activities carried out by the International Centre for A dvanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies/Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Zaragoza (CIHEAM/IAMZ). CAQ elected a new Chairperson and two Vice-chairpersons for the Committee.

    The fourth session of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) met in Athens, Greece, from 4 to 7 June 2001 and was attended by delegates from fifteen Members of the Commission. The Committee reviewed the conclusions and recommendations of its four Sub-Committees and its ad hoc Working Group on Management Units. The Committee noted that some stocks are fully exploited and recommended the reduction of the fishing effort targeting these stocks. The Committee recommended to declare the year 2002 the year of the anchovy. The Committee recommended to further investigate the feasibility of an ecosystem management-based approach to Mediterranean fisheries. It agreed on a proposal for a regional project on statistics (MEDIFSIS) that should be examined by the Commission during its next Session. The Committee agreed also on a proposal made by the European Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Committee (EIFAC) to set up a Joint Working Group on Sturge on provided that Black Sea riparian GFCM Members agree on such a proposal.

    The eighth session of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) of the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) was held in Tirana, Albania, from 25 to 28 October 2005. It was attended by delegates from fifteen Members of the Commission. The Committee appraised the scientific and technical activities performed by its subsidiary bodies during the intersessional period as well as those of the FAO regional projects supporting the Commission. SAC reviewed fishery management proposals emanating from its Sub-Committees and formulated related advice for consideration by the Commission. It identified research priorities and agreed on its workplan for 2006. It also suggested measures for the protection of certain marine ecosystems. In particular, SAC endorsed some principles for implementing the ecosystem approach to fisheries (EAF), favoured the establishment of a Network on fish technologists to address gear selectivity issues and reiterated the importance of further standardiz ing stock assessment methodologies. The Committee emphasized the need to pursue efforts for implementing the Operational Units concept addressing the multispecies fisheries. It expressed the wish to accelerate the establishment of the GFCM databases and information system, including its vessel register and to monitor market aspects affecting fisheries management. The Committee renewed for another term the mandate of its Chair, as well as of its vice-chairpersons and further endorsed the nominati on of the coordinators of the four Sub-Committees.
