This publication focuses on the state of food and agriculture in Asia and the Pacific and is a complement to "The State of Food and Agriculture" published by FAO headquarters in Rome which concentrates on global issues. This is the second issue of the series which highlights both the challenges and opportunities to food security in the region. The first part of the publication examines hunger and poverty in the region, changes in dietary patterns, agricultural commodity trends, and the outlook f or the future, including the major challenges that need to be addressed. The second part provides a special focus on the new "gold rush": biofuels development in Asia and the Pacific. As biofuels are likely to have a major influence on agricultural commodity prices and rural incomes for some time to come, the status of biofuels development in the region is assessed. The main focus of the analysis is on the potential effects of the demand for biofuels on regional household food security. -

This chapter provides an overview of the latest set of quantitative medium-term projections for global and national agricultural markets. The projections cover production, consumption, stocks, trade and prices for 25 agricultural products for the period 2016 to 2025. The chapter starts with a description of the state of agricultural markets in 2015 and explains the main macroeconomic and policy assumptions underlying the projections. In the next sections, consumption and production trends are ex amined, with a focus on regional developments. The chapter also reviews trade patterns showing the relative concentration of exports and dispersion of imports across countries for different commodities. The chapter concludes with global agricultural price projections, which include a stochastic analysis to illustrate how uncertainty about the macroeconomic environment and yield levels might affect price projections. Growing demand for agricultural commodities is projected to be matched by effici ency gains in production which will keep real agricultural prices relatively flat.Read the Summary of the report.

2016The twelfth joint edition of the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook provides market projections to 2025 for major agricultural commodities, biofuels and fish. The 2016 report contains a special feature on the prospects for, and challenges facing, Sub-Saharan Africa.Over the ten year Outlook period slowing demand growth will be matched by efficiency gains in production, implying relatively flat real agricultural prices. However, market and policy uncertainties imply a risk of resurgent volatility. The outlook for agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa is for rising food availability, which will support a declining incidence of undernourishment. The sector’s prospects could be much improved by more stable policies across the region, by strategic public and private investments, notably in infrastructure, and by suitably adapted research and extension.
