This Pocket Guide presents a fully illustrated identification guide to a selection of shark species of the North Atlantic, encompassing FAO Fishing Areas 21 and 27. It includes 38 species selected as being most relevant to commercial fisheries, vulnerable to exploitation due to their life history characteristics, or are taken in large numbers as discarded bycatch. Information under each species account includes FAO common names, local names, scientific name, FAO 3-alpha code, a colour illustrati on of the species lateral view and often illustrations of anatomical details, main field marks and diagnostic features, size and main distinctive characters of similar species occurring in the area. Moreover, it includes a photograph of the species, information on fisheries, fishing methods, EU, non-EU, and RFMOs regulations in force in 2012, geographic distribution, conservation status, whether it is a prohibited species, if the fins are marketed, zones of occurrence and maximum depth of common ly caught specimens. The pocket guide is aimed at providing a quick reference and identification tool for the sharks of the North Atlantic. The pocket format and the plastic support make it an easy-to-carry tool that can be used in wet environments and underwater.

This volume is a comprehensive, fully illustrated Catalogue of the Sharks, Batoid Fishes, and Chimaeras of the North Atlantic, encompassing FAO Fishing Areas 21 and 27. The present volume includes 11 orders, 32 families, 66 genera, and 148 species of cartilaginous fishes occurring in the North Atlantic. The Catalogue includes a section on standard measurements for a shark, batoid, and chimaera, with associated terms. It provides accounts for all orders, families, and genera and all keys to taxa are fully illustrated. Information under each species account includes: valid modern names and original citation of the species; synonyms; the English, French, and Spanish FAO names for the species; a lateral view for sharks and chimaeras, dorsal and often also ventral view for batoids, and often other useful illustrations; field marks; diagnostic features; distribution, including a GIS map; habitat; biology; size; interest to fisheries and human impact; local names when available; a remarks sec tions; and literature. The volume is fully indexed and also includes sections on terminology and measurements including an extensive glossary, a list of species by FAO Statistical Areas, and a dedicated bibliography.

The Living Marine Resources of the Eastern Central Atlantic. Volume 2: Bivalves, gastropods, hagfishes, sharks, batoid fishes, and chimaeras 2016
    Also available in:
    No results found.

This multivolume field guide covers the species of interest to fisheries of the major marine resource groups exploited in the Eastern Central Atlantic. The area of coverage includes FAO fishing area 34 and part of 47. The marine resource groups included are bivalves, gastropods, chitons, cephalopods, stomatopods, shrimps, lobsters, crabs, hagfishes, sharks, batoid fishes, chimaeras, bony fishes and sea turtles. The introductory chapter outlines the environmental, ecological, and biogeographical factors influencing the marine biota, and the basic components of the fisheries in the Eastern Central Atlantic. Within the field guide, the sections on the re source groups are arranged phylogenetically according to higher taxonomic levels such as class, order, and family. Each resource group is introduced by general re marks on the group, an illustrated section on technical terms and measurements, and a key or guide to orders or families. Each family generally has an account summarizing family diagnostic characters, bi o logical and fisheries in formation, notes on similar families occur ring in the area, a key to species, a check list of species, and a short list of relevant literature. Families that are less important to fisheries include an abbreviated family ac count and no de tailed species in formation. Species in the important families are treated in detail (arranged alphabetically by genus and species) and include the species name, frequent synonyms and names of similar speci es, an illustration, FAO common name(s), diagnostic characters, biology and fisheries in formation, notes on geo graphical distribution, and a distribution map. For less important species, abbreviated accounts are used. Generally, this includes the species name, FAO common name(s), an illustration, a distribution map, and notes on biology, fisheries, and distribution. Each volume concludes with its own index of scientific and common names.
