This document summarizes proceedings of the webinar organized by the Agrifood Systems and Food Safety Division of FAO as a follow-up to the recent FAO publication "Food safety implications from the use of environmental inhibitors in agrifood systems". The aim was to stimulate discussion on the food safety aspects that need to be considered and addressed when using environmental inhibitors in agrifood production. The webinar was part of the activities under the FAO Food Safety Foresight Programme.

This paper is part of a series detailing new methodologies for estimating key components of agri-food systems emissions, with a view to disseminate the information in FAOSTAT. It describes methods for estimating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuel-based energy use in agri-food systems processes outside agricultural land, i.e. those associated with pre- and post-production activities – in an effort to inform countries of the environmental impacts of agri-food systems and the possible options to reduce them.

    Agrifood solutions to climate change
FAO's work to tackle the climate crisis
    2023
Amid a worsening climate crisis and slow progress in cutting greenhouse gases, sustainable agrifood systems practices can help countries and communities to adapt, build resilience and mitigate emissions, ensuring food security and nutrition for a growing global population. FAO is working with countries and partners from government to community level to simultaneously address the challenges of food security, climate change and biodiversity loss. But none of this will ultimately succeed unless the world commits to a significant increase in the quality and quantity of climate finance.
