The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture (MEWA) of Saudi Arabia have signed the FAO–Saudi Technical Cooperation Programme (2019–2025) under which FAO’s technical and advisory support to the MEWA is facilitated, coordinated and managed. Within the framework of the technical cooperation programme, the programme, “Strengthening MEWA’s capacity to implement the Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development,” has been approved. Under this programme, FAO will provide technical and advisory assistance to the MEWA in implementing its flagship programme, which was approved within the context of the National Transformation Programme of the Saudi Vision 2030.This guide was prepared under the framework of the Sustainable Rural Agricultural Development Programme. The guide provides clear technical and management guidelines for nursery operation and management to guide technicians of the National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification and all other relevant entities in the country in the production of high quality tree and shrub seedlings. The guide provides easy-to-follow instructions that can be understood by non-specialized individuals on the establishment and management of nurseries for the production of native tree and shrub species. Good management of nurseries is fundamental to producing good quality seedlings, and good quality seedlings are the foundation of any planting programme. The use of native species is emphasized due to their better adaptation to local climate conditions and terrain, thus providing better resilience to climate change and reducing the risks related to invasive species, pests and disease outbreaks. The guide covers various aspects of nursery management, including site selection, nursery layout, growing media, container filling, seed sowing, irrigation, tending of seedlings and pest management.

Establishment of forest nurseries by smallholders in the cold winter deserts of Uzbekistan 2023

Nursery is an area where plants are raised for eventual planting out. It consists of paths, nursery beds, irrigation channels etc. In nature, tree seeds falling in the ground germinate as seedling under existing soil and climatic conditions. Often the growing conditions are harsh in the cold winter deserts and soils are degraded. The growing seedlings commonly have to compete with other desert plant species. These adverse conditions result in poor survival of the seedlings and sparse tree population in the deserts. Hence, natural growth of seedlings through direct planting of seeding is difficult in the deserts. To address these issues for successful reforestation, forest nurseries are used to raise seedlings by providing optimum management conditions to raise vigorous seedlings during their critical early growth stage.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, under its Technical Cooperation Programme, is providing assistance to the Government of Pakistan for the purpose of improving fisheries production in those reservoirs administered by the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA). Under the framework of the TCP Project “Fisheries Development in Reservoirs” TCP/PAK/6657, Mr. Woynarovich was assigned as consultant (Aquaculture Engineer) for the period of three months. The consultanc y was carried out between 20 April to 19 May 1987 and 16 September to 2 November 1987. Thus, the terms of reference for the Aquaculture Engineer consultant were: to review the present state of hatchery-pond units at Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs and to give recommendations to improve them, and to prepare designs for new hatchery-nursery pond complexes at Hub, Tarbela and Mangla reservoirs. The consultant worked together with other project consultants, (Dr. I. Dunn - Project Coordinator /Senior Fisheries Specialist, Mr. K. G. Rajbanshi -Aquaculture Specialist, Dr. T. Brenner - Limnologist/Fishery Biologist and Dr. W. George - Limnologist) on the site and developed the present work while in consultation with them.

Planning in government forest agencies how to balance forest use and conservation: agenda for training workshop. 1998

The purpose of planning for forestry development is to establish a workable framework for forest use and conservation which incorporates the economic, social and environmental dimensions on a sustainable basis. The framework is about creating a shared vision of how forests will be used and protected. This can be summed up in a single central question: Trees and forests for whom and for what? The question is not new but what is new is the perception that so many different groups have an interest in the reply. Forestry planning has traditionally been mainly concerned with the production of timber for industry and other wood products, and with forest industry development. Planning for environmental goals also has a long history but was largely restricted to designated areas for exclusive conservation. National forestry development agencies were essentially responsible for the sustained yield management on protected public forest lands and for reserved forests. The term "sustained yield " was mostly limited to wood production and therefore excluded the majority of other forest products and services. Although most forestry agencies have made progress towards multiple-use management, planning remains often biased towards timber in a wide range of countries. Many of the actions taken in order to stimulate forestry development in the immediate failed to sustain the momentum of growth in the longer term. Short term achievements sometimes resulted in degradation or destruction of the stock of natural capital needed in order to maintain growth in the future or reduced options for future end uses by degrading the forest capital.
