    The Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) and FAO National Stakeholders’ Workshops on Fishing Effort and Capacity on Lake Victoria (2006) were held to: (i) develop a shared understanding amongst participants regarding the LVFO Regional Plan of Action for the Management of Fishing Capacity in Lake Victoria and its Basin (LVFO RPOA-Capacity) and the use of rights-based management approaches as a vehicle for ensuring the sustainable utilization of fisheries resources; (ii) provide f eedback regarding the LVFO RPOA-Capacity as input for the Regional RPOA-Capacity Workshop; (iii) outline steps for the development and implementation of National Plans of Action for the Management of Fishing Capacity; and (iv) provide stakeholder-generated advice regarding improving tenure security for fishers on Lake Victoria and its basin to be used at the FAO Regional Workshop on Improving Tenure Security for the Rural Poor (Nakuru, Kenya). The results of the workshops included acti ons for progressing work on the management of fishing capacity as well as guidance for the development of a LVFO RPOA-Capacity. This document contains the report of the workshops as well as information provided by the participants. This document and the actions adopted by the workshop participants can serve as a basis for further work aimed at improving regional fisheries management and the management of fishing capacity.

    The First Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) and FAO Regional Technical Workshop on Fishing Effort and Capacity on Lake Victoria was held in Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania, 12 – 14 December 2005. The main objectives of the regional workshop were to raise the importance of managing fishing capacity and effort and discuss strategies that may be used to reduce capacity where necessary as part of taking measures for ensuring long-term sustainable utilization of the fishery resources of Lake V ictoria; to develop and agree on mechanisms for assessing overall capacity on the entire lake; and to highlight the linkages between the management of fishing effort, capacity, and concomitant IUU fishing. The results of the workshop include actions for progressing work on the management of fishing capacity as well as guidance for the development of a Regional Plan of Action for the Management of Fishing Capacity on Lake Victoria. This document contains the report of the workshop as well as the papers and input provided by the participants. This document, and in particular, the actions adopted by the workshop participants can serve as a basis for further work aimed at improving regional fisheries management and the management of fishing capacity.

    The three papers in this volume were originally presented as a combined Uganda country paper at the FAO/UNDP Regional Workshop on Fisheries Statistics and Information Systems for Lake Victoria, held in Kampala during 26–29 June 1990 and organised by the Regional Project for Inland Fisheries Planning, Development and Management in Eastern/Central/ Southern Africa (RAF/87/099 --IFIP) in collaboration with the FISHIN Project (UGA/87/007). Statistics and information collection and management for Lak e Victoria - Uganda are examined in terms of: (a) the inventory of fishing factors; (b) catch/effort sampling; and (c) socio-economic data. Attention is given to: the design of and procdures for data collection; quality control; resources in terms of facilities and personnel; and shortcomings inherent to existing arrangements along with recommendations for their resolution.

    Micronutrient deficiencies affect more than two billion people in the world today. With long-ranging effects on health, learning ability and productivity they contribute to the vicious cycle of malnutrition, underdevelopment and poverty. Food-based approaches, which include food production, dietary diversification and food fortification, are sustainable strategies for improving the micronutrient status of populations and raising levels of nutrition. Combating Micronutrient Deficiencies: Food-bas ed Approaches focuses on practical, sustainable actions for overcoming micronutrient deficiencies through increased availability, access to and consumption of adequate quantities and appropriate varieties of safe, good quality food. The volume brings together the available knowledge, success stories and lessons learned to demonstrate that foodbased approaches are viable, sustainable and long-term solutions to overcoming micronutrient malnutrition. This booklet is a summary of the publication and contains the abstracts and the list of key words for each chapter.     This document contains the report of the Symposium on Impacts of Fishing on the Environment arranged by the ICES-FAO Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behaviour (WGFTFB) held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 6 to 10 May 2013. The Symposium was attended by more than 130 fisheries experts from 25 countries, and it provided an opportunity for fishing technologists and others from ICES member countries to exchange knowledge and ideas with contemporaries from around the world, especially Asia. T he symposium comprised three one-day sessions: (i) low-impact and fuel-efficient fishing gear (LIFE); (ii) use of artificial light as a stimulus on fish behaviour in fish capture (LIGHT); and (iii) selectivity of trawls in multispecies/crustacean fisheries (SHRIMP). This report summarizes the presentations of the Symposium and concludes the main discussions. This report also summarizes presentations from the open session of the annual WGFTFB meeting.

    Report of the thirtieth session of the Committee on Fisheries

    The thirtieth session of the Committee on Fisheries (COFI) was held in Rome, Italy, from 9 to 13 July 2012. The Committee reviewed the issues of an international character and the FAO programme in fisheries and aquaculture, and their implementation. The Committee, while stressing the high value of the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture as a flagship publication, recommended that FAO should provide more support to countries in data collection and quality control, as well as consider a si mpler classification of stock status. The Committee expressed strong support for the standards and norms of the Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries and its related instruments and agreed on further effort to facilitate their accessibility and more effective implementation. The Committee agreed on the development of best practice guidelines for traceability. The Committee reiterated its support to FAO’s collaboration with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and the World Trade Organization. The Committee reiterated the request for additional assistance for aquaculture development in Africa and Small Island Developing States. The Committee requested FAO to develop a conformity assessment framework for aquaculture certification guidelines as well as a draft strategy paper including a long-term strategic plan for the Sub-Committee on Aquaculture and emphasized the specific needs for future work. The Committee urged FAO to reinforce it s emphasis on fish as food, ensure that these aspects were not lost in the global and regional frameworks for ocean conservation and management, and assert its leading role in fisheries and aquaculture in ocean governance. The Committee requested FAO to address the issue of hydrocarbon deposits in the oceans and assess possible threats arising from their development. The Committee called for continuous consultation with all stakeholders in the development of the International Guidelines for Secu ring Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries and agreed on the need to develop implementation strategies for the Guidelines. The Committee agreed that illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing continues to be a persistent and pressing problem adversely impacting on sustainable fisheries and food security. The Committee endorsed the terms of reference for the Ad hoc Working Group for the 2009 FAO Agreement on Port State Measures. The Committee requested to convene the second resumed session of the te chnical consultation on the draft Criteria for Flag State Performance. The Committee reiterated its support for the Global Record of Fishing Vessels, Refrigerated Transport Vessels and Supply Vessels. The Committee agreed that FAO should focus on challenges relevant to its core mandate and must join efforts with partners in better coordination and urged FAO to ensure that fisheries and aquaculture priorities were reflected under the Strategic Objectives. The Committee adopted the revised Rules o f Procedure and endorsed the related changes in current practice. The Committee also approved the Multiyear Programme of Work (MYPOW) 2012–2015.
