Synopsis (short abstract) The Land Tenure Journal is published by FAO as a medium for the dissemination of information and views on tenure of land and other natural resources in the framework of the Voluntary Guidelines for the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) which is a standard for FAO’s work on tenure. The audience consist of people having interest in tenure of land and other resources in its broadest technical, economic, political and social senses. The prime beneficiaries include practitioners and professionals from international and national agencies, central and local governments, civil society organizations and academia. Articles are published in English, French or Spanish. The content of the Journal reflects the versatile priorities of FAO’s Tenure Governance normative and field programs as well as priorities of the Journal’s audience. The Journal aims to present a holistic and politically, culturally and regionally diversified view on tenure of land and other natural resources.

    This edition of the Land Tenure Journal features a selection of articles from Central and Eastern Europe to Francophone and Anglophone West Africa, through East Africa and back to Northern Europe. The focus of the topics spans land consolidation approaches in Europe, experiences of land colonization and an overview of tenure reforms in Burkina Faso, post-conflict land policy in Liberia, land reform in Malawi, and community commons in Norway. The topics reflect a wide variety of tenure governance issues that are at the core of the CFS-endorsed Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forestry in the Context of National Food Security.

The present paper is written as part of the overall Voluntary Guidelines consultation and development process and is a contribution to the subsequent preparation of the Gender Technical Guide. It contextualises and defines gender for the Voluntary Guidelines, discusses what governance of tenure means from a gender perspective and identifies and analyses key issues and themes. It then summarises recommendations relevant to gender before drawing some conclusions for t he development process of the Voluntary Guidelines.

    This publication looks at the land governance situation in the Caribbean subregion. This working paper was done in light of FAO’s Voluntary Guidelines on Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land and other Natural Resources. Caribbean countries in general have key issues affecting land and natural resources tenure. This study identifies and assesses these issues and provides examples of good governance in the region.
