    The seventh FAO Expert Consultation on Fish Technology in Africa was held in the framework of the Cooperative Research Programme on Fish Technology in Africa coordinated by the Fish Utilization and Marketing Service of FAO's Fishery Industries Division in collaboration with the FAO Regional Office for Africa. The Consultation was held to review progress and problems in post-harvest fish utilization in Africa and make recommendations to FAO, its member countries and all institutes, instit utions and persons interested in fish utilization in Africa. The experts reviewed in particular fresh fish utilization, fish processing, quality assurance, and marketing and socio-economic issues. The review was done through presentation by the secretariat of a report on progress and events since the previous Consultation held in 1996, presentation of 20 papers, abstracts of 10 additional papers, and a field trip to fish landing and processing sites in Mbour and Joal. The report includ es the recommendations as well as the papers that were available to the experts.

    The fourth Meeting of Professionals/Experts in support of Fish Safety, Technology, and Marketing in Africa was jointly organized by the Products, Trade and Marketing Branch of FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture, Policy and Economics Division, and the FAO Regional Office in Accra, Ghana. The meeting reviewed progress in post-harvest fish utilization in Africa and made recommendations to FAO, its Members and institutes interested in fish utilization in Africa. In particular, the experts reviewed fresh or live fish handling, fish processing, post-harvest loss assessment, quality and safety, and marketing and socio-economic issues. The meeting included: a presentation by the secretariat of a report on progress and events since the workshop held in 2011; presentation of 27 papers; and a field trip to a fishing community. The report includes the recommendations as well as the papers that were made available to the experts. La quatrième réunion des professionnels/experts en appui à la sécurité sanitaire, à la technologie et au commerce du poisson en Afrique a été organisée par le Service des produits, des échanges et de la commercialisation de la Division des politiques et de l’économie de la pêche et de l’aquaculture de la FAO, et le Bureau régional de la FAO à Accra, Ghana. La réunion a passé en revue les progrès dans l’utilisation du poisson post-capture en Afrique et fait des recommandations à la FAO, à ses pays Membres et aux instituts intéressés par l’utilisation du poisson en Afrique. Les experts ont passé en revue notamment la manutention du poisson frais ou vivant, la transformation du poisson, l’évaluation des pertes post-captures, la sécurité sanitaire et la qualité, la commercialisation et les questions socioéconomiques. Cette révision s’est effectuée à travers la présentation, par le secrétariat, du rapport sur les progrès et événements depuis l’Atelier qui s’est tenu en 2011, des présentations de 27 communications et une visite de terrain à une communauté de pêcheurs à Elmina. Le rapport inclut les recommandations de même que les communications qui ont été mises à la disposition des experts.

    Seafood traceability systems: gap analysis of inconsistencies in standards and norms 2016
    This report identifies and analyses gaps and inconsistencies in the current fish traceability standards and regulations. As a first step in reaching this goal, the key terms in understanding the concept of traceability were explained and this concept was described in connection with related notion. The second step consisted in performing a comprehensive literature review on which the gap analysis of the traceability standards and regulations was built on. The last step in this study was performi ng a content analysis of selected international standards and guidelines, regulatory standards, and industry and NGO non-regulatory standards. By employing this multi-method analysis several awareness, commitment, implementation, technology and standards gaps were identified and described. In addition, specific inter- and intra-institutions inconsistencies were highlighted. Finally, recommendations for governments and stakeholders along the value chain were discussed.
