    This report aims to highlight the current strengths of the institutional DRR system for agriculture in Turkmenistan as well as indicate existing gaps and capacity needs to further enhance it. A comprehensive assessment is conducted, which includes a general overview of the country’s agricultural sector and outlines the most frequent natural hazards that are impacting the sector. It is followed by an analysis of the existing legal, policy and institutional structure and discusses various components of the system, including e.g. the functioning of early warning systems, assessments of disaster risks, post-disaster needs assessments, including damages and losses assessments and the availability of agricultural insurance for farmers. It concludes by providing recommendations for capacity building interventions to strengthen the current system to reduce the adverse impacts of natural hazards, in particular, floods, landslides and droughts, and climate change on agriculture in Turkmenistan.

    Concerns over water scarcity and severe water supply shortages are driving governments to find alternative solutions, including the development of non conventional water resources In this context, the application of non conventional waters ( has the potential to help countries meet increasing water demands, particularly during years of drought Moreover, through proper planning and management, NCW reuse schemes offer economic and environmental benefits The Kyrgyz Republic lacks an integrated approach to Climate Change and Adaptation ( and Disaster Risk Resilience ( in agriculture The Government is constrained in terms of resources and capacities, above all in the identification of the impact on the agriculture sector of natural hazards and in the technical knowledge required for early warning and response The scarce resources available are focused on major disasters and crises, despite the frequent occurrence of small and medium scale emergencies that have a permanent negative impact on development in the sector The country, with support from the international community, has taken steps to increase its capacity to reduce disaster risk, and to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change However, CCA and DRR initiatives have rarely applied an holistic approach to agriculture despite its importance and the threat to both the sector and the rural population represented by climate change and variables, as well as by weather extremes.

    Scombrotoxin fi sh poisoning (SFP) (oft en called “histamine poisoning”) is caused by ingestion of certain species of marine fi sh that contain high levels of histamine and possibly other biogenic amines. Codex Alimentarius through its standards and guidelines aims to provide countries with a basis on which to manage issues such as histamine formation. Several of the existing standards include maximum levels for histamine in diff erent fi sh and fi shery products. Th e need to harmoniz e such limits and produce the associated guidance on the relevant sampling plans and other aspects of sampling resulted in the 31st Session of the Codex Committee on Fish and Fishery Products (CCFFP), which agreed to look into the issue of histamine limits in more detail. Th e Committee established an electronic Working Group in order to facilitate this work and identifi ed the need for scientifi c advice from FAO and WHO to support this work. FAO and WHO convened an expert meeting at the FAO headquarters in Rome from 23 to 27 July 2012 to address the public health risks of histamine and other biogenic amines from fi sh and fi shery products. Th is report summarizes the outcome of that meeting.

    In recent years, several major drivers have put the world off track to ending world hunger and malnutrition in all its forms by 2030. The challenges have grown with the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures. This report presents the first global assessment of food insecurity and malnutrition for 2020 and offers some indication of what hunger might look like by 2030 in a scenario further complicated by the enduring effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. It also includes new estimates of the cost and affordability of healthy diets, which provide an important link between the food security and nutrition indicators and the analysis of their trends. Altogether, the report highlights the need for a deeper reflection on how to better address the global food security and nutrition situation.To understand how hunger and malnutrition have reached these critical levels, this report draws on the analyses of the past four editions, which have produced a vast, evidence-based body of knowledge of the major drivers behind the recent changes in food security and nutrition. These drivers, which are increasing in frequency and intensity, include conflicts, climate variability and extremes, and economic slowdowns and downturns – all exacerbated by the underlying causes of poverty and very high and persistent levels of inequality. In addition, millions of people around the world suffer from food insecurity and different forms of malnutrition because they cannot afford the cost of healthy diets. From a synthesized understanding of this knowledge, updates and additional analyses are generated to create a holistic view of the combined effects of these drivers, both on each other and on food systems, and how they negatively affect food security and nutrition around the world.In turn, the evidence informs an in-depth look at how to move from silo solutions to integrated food systems solutions. In this regard, the report proposes transformative pathways that specifically address the challenges posed by the major drivers, also highlighting the types of policy and investment portfolios required to transform food systems for food security, improved nutrition, and affordable healthy diets for all. The report observes that, while the pandemic has caused major setbacks, there is much to be learned from the vulnerabilities and inequalities it has laid bare. If taken to heart, these new insights and wisdom can help get the world back on track towards the goal of ending hunger, food insecurity, and malnutrition in all its forms.

    FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 2022
    The FAO Strategy on Climate Change 2022–2031 was endorsed by FAO Council in June 2022. This new strategy replaces the previous strategy from 2017 to better FAO's climate action with the Strategic Framework 2022-2031, and other FAO strategies that have been developed since then. The Strategy was elaborated following an inclusive process of consultation with FAO Members, FAO staff from headquarters and decentralized offices, as well as external partners. It articulates FAO's vision for agrifood systems by 2050, around three main pillars of action: at global and regional level, at country level, and at local level. The Strategy also encourages key guiding principles for action, such as science and innovation, inclusiveness, partnerships, and access to finance.
