No results found.Rural women are crucial contributors to Albania's agricultural sector and rural economy. They are actively involved in all stages of agrifood value chains as farmers, producers, processors, and consumers. Yet structural barriers limit their access to economic opportunities, thereby restricting also agrifood value chain sustainable and inclusive development. This publication employs FAO's gender-responsive value chain approach to analyze three case studies from Elbasan, Puka, and Leskovik. It highlights the opportunities for strengthening the role of women producers and processors in value chains and identifies key barriers that hinder women's full participation. Agribusiness incubators are highlighted in the report as innovative solutions designed to meet the specific needs of rural women and promote their economic empowerment. These incubators could play a crucial role in helping women overcome barriers in the agrifood sector, fostering their participation and unlocking new opportunities for the development of specific agrifood value chains. -

No results found.This report builds upon FAO’s work promoting gender mainstreaming in extension and advisory services, cataloguing challenges and suggesting strategies for increasing the gender responsiveness of rural advisory services globally. The purpose of this review is to apply FAO’s accumulated knowledge about gender equality in the context of rural advisory services to assess the situation in the Europe and Central Asia region. The report provides a snapshot of the extent to which gender considerations are currently integrated into rural advisory services in the region and highlights good practices that are in line with FAO’s gender equality strategies. The report concludes with recommendations for FAO, partner organizations and stakeholders in the fields of agricultural extension and rural advisory services, on how to further improve such services to extend their reach to rural women and men who have previously had limited or no access. This process requires moving away from gender‑neutral service provision, which often results in the exclusion of women, towards transformative extension and rural advisory services that challenge unequal gender relations and address underlying discriminatory norms and practices. -

No results found.Women make up two-thirds of the 600 million low-income livestock keepers globally. Despite their leading role in the day-to-day care of animals, they are severely underserved by veterinary extension and advisory services. Women frontline animal health professionals can be a crucial channel for reaching and addressing the needs of women livestock keepers, particularly in contexts where rigid gender norms restrict women’s interactions with male service providers. Yet, in sub-Saharan Africa, the veterinary workforce remains predominantly male, and women face significant gender-based challenges working in the field. These include pay gaps, conflicting family responsibilities, gender bias, sexual harassment, limited confidence, and insufficient technical training in animal restraint. As a result, many women professionals may shift to safer, more flexible, office-based positions (e.g. laboratory technicians stationed in clinics) or leave the profession entirely, furthering the gender gap in veterinary service access. Two FAO initiatives have developed and tested gender-responsive training packages for veterinary paraprofessionals to enhance productivity for both women and men livestock keepers while promoting capacity building and business sustainability for women and men frontline professionals. This paper provides an overview of how these training programmes were designed and implemented with a cross-cutting gender-responsive approach. It also shares key results, learnings, and recommendations that may benefit other stakeholders interested in integrating gender considerations into veterinary education programmes.
